Picking out a shotgun for skeet

Im sorry if every one is sick of looking at these types of posts but i need a bit of help.

I was recently turned on to skeet shooting and have decided to get a 12 gauge shot gun.im not sure if i want to get it for the soul purpose of skeet.it would serve as hd as well but im not worried about that. I have been looking at the Mossberg website and have glanced over at the Remington site but im still not sure.I was thinking about getting the 590 but i cant decide if i want a longer barrel.i was thinking of atleast 24-28inch barrel for skeet. Basically im just looking for some suggestions or advice.Im trying to stay at about $400 Thanks.

For skeet I would go with a semi auto over a pump. It's pretty tough to shoot doubles with a pump.

Thanks i have been looking at the mossberg auto loaders and was thinking of the waterfowl but the WF looks similar to the turkey is there a difference beside the choke? Also have you ever ordered from that link that you posted? How would that work would they have to send it to a dealer? How much is the charge? Thanks alot

Yes, they have to ship to a dealer. You'll be looking at another 65-100 bucks, depending which dealer you chose. I think some dealers charge tax, as well. Gotta call around to get prices before hand.

I bought a Browning BPS pump for about 5-600 and LOVE it.
The thing I've seen with semi's or maybe it's just the 11-87 is it has a problem cycling birdshot so you may need to research that. It may also be ammo but that's just what I've seen.

My dealer charges me 50 bucks flat. 25 for the transfer and 25 for the DROS and doesn't charge a penny tax. If they're trying to tax you on something they didn't sell you, you're getting screwed over.

Fact of the matter is that it dosn't matter what you use. I've seen every shotgun used for skeet and used well. What matters is fit. You won't hit squat if the gun is a bad fit. So before you decide on a shotgun, you must shoulder the gun to see if it fits.......with your eyes closed, shoulder the shotgun in one motion...open your shooting eye....you should not see any length of barrel (top or side). You should see only the front bead sitting on a line. Try different guns until when your eye opens you see just the bead sitting on a line ....buy that shotgun! This exercise is done with eyes closed because if you do it with the eyes open you will by nature adjust to make the gun fit. When hitting clays, like baseball and golf, you keep your eyes on the clay and your gun will not be adjusted. Or you can consentrate on your shotgun adjustments and miss the clay. Same applies with flushing or flying game....no time to adjust if you want pheasant for dinner.

I bought the S&W 1012 semi for clays at the range. However, I bought the mossberg 500 with 2 barrels for HD and taking out actual hunting. the 500 is only 279 bucks with both barrels (18.5" and 28") so if you beat it up a little while hunting... oh well... much like I consider brush scratches on my 94 f250 power stroke honor badges If I was going to go through some gun friendly area hunting I would take the 1012 too.

TRUE STATEMENT! Find a shop that specializes in shotguns. Let them help you find the right gun. I personally like the O/U. If I could not have the O/U, I would pick a semi-auto. You normally only need to load 1 or 2 shells at a time, no need for higher capacity. Most popular barrels in skeet are in the 26" to 30" range.
If you were in the LA area, I would send you to Pacific Sporting Arms in Irwindale, CA. The owner is John. He WILL find that 'magic fit' for you ;-).

thats hard to do i live in a small town and there is one gun store and they only had one shotgun and it was like $1400. thanks thou.

Go to your local trap and skeet club and start talking to all those old farts who hang out there. They are a great resource and will normally help point you in the right dirrection.

As nice as Pacific Sporting Arms is and how nice of a guy John is I dont think there is any gun in that store for around $400. I would say just wait till a Remington 1100 goes up for sale on CGs. You can buy a skeet barrel for under $150 and whatever barrel that comes with the gun should work just fine for HD.

For years pump guns were always seen on the skeet fields. Your main here problem is your budget. A Mossberg or Remington pump will pretty much be all you will be able to get new for what you want to spend.
