considering a weatherby semi auto in 12 Ga. I am told the gas system takes out some recoil. should be ok withlight loads for a 10 year old.

Personally I'd go with a Rem 1100 20ga youth model.

It's not just the recoil, but also the weight of the gun, the length of the barrel, and the length of the buttstock.

Depends on the 10 year old.

My kids were recoil shy, and loved shooting .410s due to the light recoil, but they're harder to find in pump and semi, and are more expensive to feed.

I'd second the 1100 (or similar) in 20 gauge as a good compromise between felt recoil and an affordable, manageable gun. Not all 1100s cycle light loads well, so other models may be worth looking at - dunno about the Weatherby.

Another option would be a 12 gauge with a recoil reducing stock, like the Knoxx Specops, but the Specops isn't very good for teaching shooters as it messes up the natural point of the gun pretty seriously.

A light 20 gauge in non-semi can have pretty harsh recoil - my single-shot 20 gauge kicks pretty hard.

Try a beretta 390 series 20ga as well if you're willing to shell out a few more bucks.

True, a 391 20ga youth almost has negative recoil (if that's possible).

they have shot a single shot .410 and its fine. my Browning O/U is just too heavy and kicks. they like the idea of a semi. so its down between a 20 ga or 12 ga semi. but we are on a budget. otherwise the Beretta would be the one.

My dad bought me a single shot 20 ga. when i was about 10.. He didnt wanna waste money knowing within 2 years i'd be able to comfortably shoot one of his 12 ga. shotguns..

so it depends. for $100 you can get a single shot 20 ga.

its not the gauge which controls recoil, its the shell and what its loaded/how much it weights which will make the difference! If you load your own, you can make a 12guage feel like a .22 cal or a .50cal bmg...

Why? I'm 51 and I shoot a 20ga all the time. You have to walk before you run.

If you get him a 12ga now, you'll regret it. Buy a used 20ga auto, they're cheap. I paid $400 for my wife's.

My 10 year son shoots trap once a week . He loves his youth 1100 . He shoots as well with his 20 as he does with my 12. He says he likes the recoil of the 20 better. I paid 400 for ours also and it will be worth that if we every sell it. You're also welcome to try ours we're in the high desert.
