Buying an 870 today ;)

Going to go to the local gunshop a little later and pick up a Remington 870. Pretty much settled on the HD model #25077. It is mostly for HD but I will probably get a 26"? barrel for occassional trap shooting. Where could I find the best deal on one?

I think the california 10 day wait is so retarded. I already own a gun, so what difference will another make?

Well, that one is only 4+1 right? I want the HD 18.5 with 6+1.

The 25077 has the 18.5" barrel with a detent ball to hold your mag cap in place. The 26" barrel you will get will not. This is not a major issue as you can simply use one, very, very, very, very samll drop of blue loc-tite on the mag tube threads to keep the barrel on for months. You will also want to pick up an Express mag cap and a 4+1 spring for when you put the 26" barrel on. A good deal is on www.aiptactical.com accessory page. It is a tube up kit and has the mag cap, 4+1 spring and other parts that are good to have around if needed.

Bought a Remington 870 HD model# 26503 at Big 5 this week. It is currently on sale for $349.99 after the $30 mail-in rebate. It has a 20" barrel with 7+1 shot capacity. It is very similar to model# 25077 but has 3 shot extension and 20" barrel vs. the 2 shot extension and a 18.5" barrel. I'm thinking that the slightly longer barrel will be acceptable for target practice and the added length still ok for HD. The extra 1 shot capacity a plus.

To the above poster aippi, I am not sure what you mean? Why would I need a "4+1" spring if I get the 26" barrel for a 6+1 25077? will I be limited to 4+1 with the 26" barrel? Or is that just part of the kit?

Now I am not so sure since the 20" is cheaper, but I still think the 18.5" would be preferable. And I read earlier a guy was making extensions that allow for 7+1, flush with the 18.5" barrel. Hopefully he is still making them

I assumed you would also hunt with that barrel as it is a sporting barrel and in many states that restricts round capacity. But if it is just for busting clays and your range allows them, You can use your tube extension but there is no detent ball on the 26" barrel unless it is a Wingmaster barrel so use the very small dab of blue loc-tite as the mag tube coupling will not be secured without it. May not be an issue for a day of shooting and paying attention to the mag tube may be all you need to do.

Ah thanks for the clarification. I might hunt in the future but mostly trap at the range I would think. But, the main purpose of the gun for now is for HD purposes.

I'm glad I found this thread because I wanted to get an 870 that I could use for both home defense and hunting, shooting skeet, but now that I know about the limit on rounds in a hunting shotgun, I'll just get a 7 shot later for home defense. Plus 4 in the mag, one in the pipe, plus 20 rounds of .40 - I think I'll be FINE.

I want the wood grain one. I just bought a 10/22 in wood grain and can't wait till my ten days are up...

its so you can't use double fisted guns (aka:gangster style) to shoot someone (yeah I know I'm talking about shotguns haha). If you already have 2 guns, you might use your feet or your weiner to get of a few more shots

But I just thought about what this gun is primarily for. It is for protecting me, my family, and my place.

Post piks when you get the gun, I will be getting an 870 here pretty soon and have also decided on a Remington.
