If it's a PG-only, no stock at all, I'd go with a laser rather than a red dot. PG only you're going to be shooting from the body or the hip, not from the shoulder, so I don't see how you can properly sight anything else.

Pistol grip only shotguns are really only useful for door breaching, for which sights aren't normally necessary.

its more of a bloody mouth rather then a black eye usually with that combo or any combo when your trying to use just the pistol grip and aim. pistol grip is for spray and pray type of action or door breeching (how many people actually do that, even at the range?)

+1^ and a PG will put the safety out of reach on the Mossbergs. Really I don't know why folks put a pistol grip only on their SG. Unless they have storage issues (which a folding or collapsable rig would fix) they are next to worthless to hit with. I agree the sighting system you need would be a laser, because of you're bring the gun up above chest level to index down the barrel your going to get hit, question is where and how hard.
I hate those things...They are sold to people that don't know better and then it's too late, much like most of the things for SG's in the catalogs.
          For home defense:
A light, spare ammo somewhere on the gun (not on the sling), a carry strap (tactical slings are not neccessary), period. 4+1 capacity is fine, unless you can get a manufacture's extended magazine (aftermarket stuff at your own peril, springs are off shore manufactures usually) K.I.S.S. My PG Mossberg was useless for aiming. Then I put one of those combo pistol grip and adjustable AR style stocks on and I can actually aim the thing now.
Cant believe what a difference it made.
I will never have a shotgun without a stock from now on.

Forget about a lazer or a red dot, but a stock on that thing.

The Knoxx Breecher grip eats up over 50% of the felt recoil and is the best pistol grip only stock you can use. Sights on a pistol grip only shotgun is a waste of resourses. These weapons are for very up close and personal, as in you can smell the dirt bag, defense use. Put the money in the Knoxx stock and forget the sights. The Knoxx folder however, will give you the option of pistol grip only but has a wire stock that folds down. With that stock you may want upgraded sigths on the weapon. You can see both these stocks at www.blackhawk.com

My son tried the grip only, one outing and that was it. I have a ghost site on my interstate 12 gauge. Beats the heck out of the bead at the end of the barrel.

I used to have a PG on my Winn 1300. With an 18" bbl I could outshoot any of my buddies in skeet with their full length, stocked shotguns. This is of course with no sights whatsoever because I cut down the barrel myself. I guess what I'm getting at is that it's all about how good of a shot your are. If you're using this for HD and you shoot from the chest like I do, then it doesn't really matter if you've got sights or not because with an 18" bbl it'll spread pretty good between 15'-20' which is the typical distance you would encounter someone at in your home.
To put it simply you probably don't need sights. But if I were you I'd clamp on a nice flashlight for night situations.

You are right, sights on a PG only shotgun are pretty useless. I don't agree with those that say it's impossible to aim with a PG only shotgun though. If you know how to do it, and you practice, hitting targets even 30 yards away (though pretty useless using buckshot and a skeet/cylinder choke) can be easy enough.

I've learned to shoot my Win. 1300 in 20ga decently well with only a pistol grip, and it is my choice for home defense. The main thing you have to know when shooting a PG only shotgun is that you don't aim, you point and shoot. It's similar to shooting skeet where instinct is what hits the clay rather than careful aim.
