Walmart is normally your best bet for cheap slugs. Buy them and see if they shoot well in your particular shotgun. If they do, great, stick with them. If not, cruise your local gun stores to see what they have. Try a few types to see which gives you the best groups. Then go track down that brand online to find the cheapest prices. Nobody can tell you what will be the best in your gun, as they are all different.

Bear in mind the nearest Ammo selling Walmart is in Mtn View. Big 5 in Daly City sells shotguns and slugs, keep an eye on their For Sale Flyer in the paper.

I go on the web for quanity. I try to buy a case at a time.
I like the Remington low/managed recoil.
Best to check which is accurate in your gun and which choke is the most accurate.

I use the best ammo around...what ever is on sale. Really, stick with the major brands of rifled slugs and they also do what you need done. grab what is on sale, this is target practice, right. Now when you find a one you like then get them and end the range session with a few of them to stay fine tuned. I will however pick up the Remington Sluggers when I see them and nothing else is really on sale. They seem to work just fine and the quality has not gone down like so much other stuff the past year or so.

If just for practice don't worry about lethality or accuracy or even quality all that much... Just look for the cheapest. If you want performance slugs I say go with Brenneke. I've never had to actually use one in such a situation, but they are said to be able to take just about any North American game, so I keep them loaded in my 500 for camp defense (bears, mountain lions).

I can't think of anything better for smooth bore barrels...
