why are SG's viewed as HD guns and rarely SHTF weapons?

I like shotguns for shtf as ammo is avaible. the worst part about using one for shtf would be the slow reload. Then again we live in cali where you can't slap a 30-90 round mag in to your gun of choice so perhaps its not that bad. the simple point and click interface along with not needing to be a sniper adds to its attractivness.

My HD weapon is an AR. For SHTF, I would probably choose my M1 Carbine, if I knew I was going to do a lot of walking (and I had enough ammo for it).

When SHTF, depending on the nature of the SH**, we might have to evacuate or leave our home.

A shotty is great for HD, but when I have to be on the run, a rifle with as much as possible ammo and a pistol for backup, is what I need.

I have my .45acp and soon to be 12 gauge for HD/SHTF and then in the future
I will be building an AR based rifle. I already have other hand guns and hunting rilfes, I think you need a few different guns for different scenarios.

Sure, with a rifled barrel and sabot slugs you can shoot further, but there's a lot of recoil and they're accurate for targets that aren't moving.
Don't mean to be too rude here but you are in need of some experience. That statement couldn't be further from the truth.

If Vista isn't too far from the range at Pala I suggest you go there for a 3 gun match and see how far and fast you can engage targets with a shotgun.

I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

yeah im sure plenty of sporting clays guys will disagree to. i would say the number 1 and2 reasons would be slow rate of fire, and slow rate of reload. and number 3, its not as cool as an ar or ak. also im with eccvets on losing all the silly acronyms, well at least most of them(i do realize that i just used "ak" and "ar") ITAYLSWIM. it reminds me of how my 16 year old neice text messages. are we all turning into 16 year old girls? i hope not

Most anything a SG can do a Rifle can do better. SHTF guns depends on location, bugout plans/shelter in place, and of course budget. The "cons" have been pointed out.
                        "Pros":
Today, a SG makes sense for a lot of people simply due to cost and they are going to stay in place. Yes, ammo is bulky, but if you're not going anywhere, is it an issue? Limited capacity? Keep topping off (tactical reloading). Definitive fight stopper. In a crowded urban evironment the SG's limited range maybe a benefit. I know alot of women that handle a 12ga better than most men, because their gun fits them and they recognize how much better they work against violent humans than handguns.
In a prefect world the bugout plan would include both, a rifle and SG. Handguns carried as a back-up or to merely help us fight to get to our long guns. If you are part of a "couple" take a team tactics course. No reason two people can't cover both bases, up close and personal and stand off distances.

depends on the SHTF situation, carbines will always be versatile... however SGs are great CQB weapons

the problem with it for me is, its not a force multiplier weapon like a autoloading mag fed centerfire.

you can be overwhelmed very fast, and will take too long to reload.

now, a clip feed assault shotgun, thats one thing. your still limited in range, but at least its now force multiplier (firepower) and easy to reload.

for me, i realized this when i started duck hunting. those first few minutes of day break, if its good, you are completly overwhelmed by the numbers and are just struggling to keep those couple shells loaded into the gun to take stuff down.

Did you intentionally say "clip" instead of "magazine"?
If you meant "magazine", and it's a semi-auto, it requires a maglock... now you're back to the same slow reloads that we face with a maglock equipped OLL type rifle.
