    870 cylcing problems

had the 870 out shooting clays. and we were having problems cycling the pump after the round fired. they were nothing fantastic just wal mart, remington and winchester, target rounds 2 3/4".it felt as though the rounds were sticking/dragging when trying to move the action back.

thoughts on problems we tryed dif ammo and had similar problems.

Whats the round count on your 870? When my 20ga wingmaster was new the action was stiff and sometimes hard to cycle but it smoothed up after a couple hundred rounds.

I have had issues with the winchester, but the federal ammo seems to work. If you spray the chamber with a quick spray of Rem Oil, you should be good to go. How many rounds have you put thru it?

clean it and oil it. the 870 is a reliable shotgun just gotta use a little lube. my friend uses moly/multi purpose grease the kind you get at the auto parts store . if the round is still stuck just rest the buttstock on the ground with the barrel facing up with one hand on the foregrip/hand pump lift it up about a foot in the air and hit the buttstock on the ground. just make sure the spent shell doesnt hit you in the face.

its been broken in with at least 800rds through it. its my Gf uncles shotgun and he lets us use it when we go it. ive cleaned it the same way as i always ahve. tri flow and otis gun oil. this is the 1st time ive had this problem.

and we gave it a quick spritz in the morning with tri flow. we did notice that the crown nut but that goes around mag tube was loose.

You may want to remove the trigger guard and bolt to look for any small brass shavings that may be lodged in the action causing it to bind.

I had the same problem with mine a while back. I would have to mortar it to cycle the pump. My gunsmith looked over the chamber and found some burs and went over them very lightly and filed them down. It had been working fine for the next year or two after that. It just recently started having the same problem. Ammo didn't really seem to make a difference. It did it with everything from Federal Low Recoil 00 Buck to some cheap target loads.

Think it needs to take a trip back to the gunsmith to have him take a looksy.

You need to do two things. First make sure the inside of the receiver is clean and the action bar channels are free of gunk. Remove the forend tube assembly and make sure the action bars are aligned and not bent or damaged which can cause binding. Second, polish the chamber. Go to Home Depot and get a 3/8" wooden hard wood dowl. Get some medium or fine steel wool and take a pad of and stretch it over the end of the dowl till it looks like a big Q-tip. Tape the bottom of the pad to the dowl. No take this big Q-tip and put it in your drill and stick the end in the chamber and let it sping around for a minute. You just polished the chamber and if your action bars are not bent or damage and the weapon is still doing this there are other issues.....Oh, when you get ready to shoot it, pust a very small drop of oil on the outside of each action bar right were it enters the receiver and rack it a few times. This helps keep it smooth.

I agree with what AIPPI posted but the steel wool might not be aggressive enough if the chamber is a little under size. If the steel wool doesn't work use some 400 or 600 grit sandpaper. Wrap the end of the dowel with cloth then use string to hold the cloth. Then wrap sand paper around that and tape it off at the bottom. When you polish keep it moving in and out.

You may have to repeat the process several times.

Throw it away or give it to me and get a Mossberg 500.

I have found loose primers in mine that have caused problems. Pop the trigger group out and make sure there isn't junk in there that is not supposed to be there.
