Remington 870 Questions

Ok Folks
I've got the shotgun bug and i've searched and searched and though I do know I want an 870 with a Knoxx recoil reducing stock..................I've reduced myself to one of those folks that you'll Oh sooo be tempted to say
"SEARCH IS YOUR FRIEND" So aside from knowing i have that coming .......
Here are my questions (not specifically 870 but shotgun in general):

And for the "what do you plan to do with it" posts I plan to shoot paper, the occasional refrigerator, some random junk my friends and i come up with, have it ready for Zombies and most importantly.....Coddel it and say OOOhhhh Ahhhh

*870 Police VS Regular
-Springs, sears, blued in the police. Am I missing anything else that would make a huge difference in my decision making process.

*Fixed Choke
-Does this mean that I don't have to worry about changing out the choke for different shells? I like simple.

*Magnum Barrels
-Ok i think i understand that Magnum Loads come up to 3.5 inch or so. If i were to find a decent used Magnum 870, could i still use 2.75+3 inch loads as i would in a non Magnum? In other words is a Magnum 870 a platform i can use regular loads with the option for magnum loads?

*Anyone Have any Experience with an 870 TAC2 or TAC3? My friend has a Tac 3 and that is were i got this darn bug but I havent seen any info. Good choice?

*Most 870's i see have a front bead sight and no rear sight.
-To add a rear sight do i need to drill and tap (no biggie)?
-Depends on the model?

*Does anyone know of a way to mount a bayonet and a green/infared laser combo to an 870?
-That was a Joke, no way no how am i mounting anything anywere. I lOVE simple!

Go get the Remington HD model #25077 and have your fun. Don 't go spend a lot of money just to scatch and itch and not even want it in a few months. If you then decide you like it and want to upgrade it, you have one of the best models to upgrade.

A fixed choke is just that--fixed. Your barrel has that choke built into it and you can't change it. Interchangeable chokes let you take out the choke tube and replace it with a different one to change the pattern, but nothing stops you from just leaving the barrel with the same choke all the time. Generally, the 18" HD/Police barrel has a fixed cylinder choke and the longer ones all have interchangeable chokes. Cylinder bore is fine for shooting washing machines in the woods as long as you take your trash home :-)

You can always use a shorter shell than your chamber, but not a longer one. Most 870s out there have a 3" chamber, so you can use 2.75 and 3" shells, but not 3.5", which are used mostly where a 10-gauge would have been used in years past.

You don't normally use or need a rear sight with a bead on a shotgun. Slug barrels often have rifle sights, though.

In short, what he said ^^ .. just get the HD model 870 Express (which has a 3" chamber and 18" cylinder bore barrel) and upgrade later if you want to hunt with it.

Get a 3" mag. version. That way you can shoot either 3" or 2.75" shells. Lots of buck and slug rounds are 3".

Drilling and tapping for the rear sight should be done by a smith unless you are really good with a drill press, or better yet have a mill.

Get an express magnum and shoot the heck out of it.

I would recommend just getting yourself the security model that shoots up to 3" slugs (which the majority of magnum loads I've seen are) Trust me on this, magnum slugs will tear your shoulders up

All 870's are built on magnum receivers except some high dollar trap models. You are not understanding the word magnum. There are 2 3/4" magnums shells, 3" and 3.5". All the 870 new models shoot the 3" but only the Super Magnum shoots the 3.5" and that is for hunting and not a gun you need for recreation shooting or Home Defense.
