    Recoil Reducer?

I'm working on a 12 ga over and under for a friend who complains about the recoil. (old guy with sore everything) He LOVES to shoot, but hates getting beat up. I've read about the recoil reducers (hydraulic buffers and/or mercury reducers) and the buttplate replacement hydraulic buttplates, but don't have any experience with them.

Has anybody used either? Have you noticed any reduction in perceived recoil?

He already shoots light loads, and LOVES this gun, so "get a 20" or "shoot lighter loads" isn't going to work.

    Thanks for any input.

There are several ways to reduced recoil. For O/Us the choices are a little limited compared to semis and pumps. You'll have to concentrate your efforts on stock work. The cheapest way is to add weight. Weight dampens recoil. If the guy wants to spend some money then you could install a Rad-II or Graco and the like. I have Rad-IIs on a few of my guns and I like them a lot. Installing one isn't for a novice though. Adding a Kickeez or Limbsaver pad helps too.

Limb saver+knoxx specops stock=super comfortable and very very low recoil. Seriously, it works even though you might need to mod his shotgun

Knox Spec Ops Stock; This course of action will most likely not work with an OVER AND UNDER shotgun. The limbsaver part helps quite a bit.

if there is a will, there is a way. you just have to be creative enought for it. to me, id rather beable to shoot a gun rather then have a nice gun I can't. Oh you can also modify the knoxx rifle compstock to fit a OVER AND UNDER shotgun as well to have it have a more natural look.

              I just found this http://www.chuckhawks.com/limbsaver_protective_pad.htm

              Limbsaver Protective Shooting Pad

You might wanna give that a go as its only 40 bucks.

For me, well I just picked up a few rounds of 3 inch magnum 00 Buckshot to play with I'm trying to challenge my shotgun to hurt me but the knoxx specops+limbsaver recoil pad seems to be able to easily tame all the slugs I have been shooting.

Hey Jeff, before you spend money on material fixes you may want to consider other things or give us a little more to work with.

He's obviously old and may have a arthritic shoulder etc and recoil reducers may indeed help but let's ask a couple more questions:

1.) How's his form? (You might need to check on this, bad form could mean more perceived recoil, it can beat you up.)

2.) 12ga loads, what light loads is he shooting? Fiocchi makes 7/8oz 12ga loads around 1150fps. I can definitely feel a difference between these and the wally world 12ga 11/8 23/4 dram loads. Even the federal 1oz 3 dram loads aren't really giving you less recoil than a wally value load, they travel at 1290fps.

3.) What kind of gun is he shooting? O/U fixed breech guns obviously have more felt recoil than semis, but if you're going to use what you got- go for it!
One thing I want to cover about the shotgun is its mass... you'll be surprised how much of a reduction of recoil there is if you just add a few ounces on the gun (in the stock or otherwise).

I use a Limbsaver on my semi and it works great, too.
                About 30 dollars.

I also heard great things about Ken Rucker's Bump Buster and Gracoil devices.
But anyway, good luck on your endeavor.
                John

                  John,

All good questions. I haven't seen him shoot for a long time (he used to be on the tactical team before he retired many, many, many, years ago), but I do know this is a gun he has been hunting with for several years and he is just starting to feel a little "beat up" after bird hunting. He was looking for a way to mitigate the soreness rather than look for a semi-auto. I hadn't considered adding weight, but it makes perfect sense after having added it to pistols for basically the same reason.

Someone suggested the KNOXX stock. I showed him information on them, I recently installed two of the KNOXX breacher units on our entry guns, but I think he wants to stay with a more traditional look. You know how old guys get, or maybe not.

I'll run the options by him again and see what he wants to do. Chances are, he'll just double up on the Motrin!!

Thanks again for all of the excellent suggestions. I knew I came to the right place for ideas!! I've looked all of them up and will keep the information handy.

                  Thanks again
                  Jeff

You can take a look at this. It fits in the stock and doesn't change the appearance. http://www.ballisticproducts.com/pro...number=1510502

If you just want to try adding weight, remove the butt pad, drill a large diameter hole in the stock, pour in some lead shot, seal it with clay and replace the butt pad.

from what i have seen, the limbsaver series seems more squishy then the supercell series of recoil pads. not sure if squishy=better recoil reduction but I think its more comfortable. It is also more sticky to clothing but I have a neoprene slip over cover on mines which negates this factor. Has anyone tried both to compare/contrast them? perhaps you can use both together?

I had not seen the remington pads, but will suggest them to him.
