    Federal ammo and Rem870

I have a Remington 870 express w/ Vang Comp barrel, and Knoxx Op stock. It is hardly new, but for the first time I have had extraction issues with it. I was using Federal shells for the first time. Most of the time I use shells with brass casing. This was the first time I had used shells with a steel casing.

After firing, I can feel the pump/action maybe give a little, but the steel case is pretty stuck in the chamber. I have to give a action a good 5 or 6 really strong tugs, or a big whack on the floor with the butt of the stock to free it. I see that some people need to polish the chamber of their 870 express. However this is the first time I have experienced this with my 870. It was occuring maybe 1 out of every 4 shells. Has anyone had problems with this particular Federal shell and their 870?

Unfortunately it was also the first time for me try the Knoxx Op stock on my 870 - so I don't know if it was the ammo or the stock. Maybe both

    thanks!

I had this same problem with this ammo, but it was only this ammo. I shoot the Estate or Winchester ammo now and have had zero issues. When I was shooting the Federal Top Gun load I would have an issue roughly every 8 shells (once per full magazine). I stopped using it and the problems went away.

My limited understanding is that a Van Comp barrel is higher end than the generic 870 express barrels. I thought FTEs were more problematic with the low-end new 870 express chambers.

I've shot mostly Federal Top Gun target ammo. Up until recently I've had no FTEs. Then for the first time when I skipped cleaning the barrel, I got one FTE per ~ 25 shells. I'm thinking of polishing the chamber, but for right now I'm going back to just cleaning the barrel after each use.

I wrapped 000 steel wool around a shotgun brush, attached it to my drill, and spun it at slow speed so the chamber was a touch bit smoother.

After that it worked smoothly. So it was a combination of steel based hulls and a chamber that needed a little bit of polishing.
