    Bears in Pasadena...

Yesterday a friend ran into a bear in Pasadena. I was wondering, has anyone here shot a bear with a shotgun slug/buckshot here? I have read about 12 Gauge Brenneke Black Magic Magnum, 3", 1-3/8 oz. B.E.T. Power Wad Slug, but have no idea what it will really do to a bear/bobcat.

I've heard 44mag is the very minimum and is barely able to penetrate.

black bears are all that is in CA these days... a 44 would not be a problem if the user was at all competent...

grizzlies are a different matter all together.

either one tho, 12ga slugs would be what i'd want, and my mossberg 500a 8-shot. But if i had 00 i would not feel inadequately armed either for black bear.

I live in northern Duarte/Monrovia and see them all the time. I keep 12 gauge slugs loaded just for bears.

Honestly though, don't need to be too high guard around them though, they're harmless. There was one bear that would come swim in my pool all summer. But every time I went out to try to catch him on camera he'd bolt instantly. My toy sized terrier chases them away all the time. It's the coyotes you gotta worry about. Those beasts aren't afraid of humans or anything...

im sure any shotgun sliug would work. im overseas with a bunch of soldiers from alaska, and ive heard many stories about moose and grizzlys getting taken down with 357 mags, in self defense that is. i dont think anyone goes to hunt them intentionally with that caliber, but if a 357 can kill a grizzly, im sure a shotgun slug could take care of a black bear

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

as far as harmless bears are concerned... its all fun and games until one bites your face off.

that's funny, a few months ago i went to a friend's house for a bbq in the hills just above foothill bl in monrovia and ran into a bear. it was sitting on a planter in his front lawn just hanging out. i parked my car across the street and it ran right by me heading up the street. seemed harmless enough.

question is, would you go out and pet it... I guess in a car or in a house i would feel some what safe but if I were face to face with a bear, I think I'd be scared but that's just me. They might have cubs just around the corner and see you as a threat.

That slug has to be good with a name that long
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

I would feel comfortably armed with some hot 44 mag loads around black bears.

Those Brenneke slugs have incredible penetration. That's pretty much what everyone carries when out in the Alaska bush. I imagine they would be more than adequate for protection against any critter in this state.

12 gauge slugs should be adequate. That was what my dad's boss insisted on for defending the cook tent out in the bush (Alaska). Unlike the elephant gun he personally used, the shotgun was good enough and usable by the mere mortals that typically did the cooking.

12 gauge slugs will be more than adequate. Black bears are not hard to kill. They are nothing like their brown cousins. A 44 mag will drop a black bear, right now. I like to hunt blackies with 180 Grain .357 mag cast flat points.
