    mossberg 9200

I have a mossberg 9200 auto-loader that I would like to convert to a 10 round mag with a shorter barrel and pistol grip. Can I do that legally? Or is it an AW? If it's okay, can I use 500 stuff? Moss doesn't make anything that they specify for the 9200. I know 500 choketubes work in it. What gives? I don't like pumps.

Well as far as the law goes a 10 round tube would be legal, a removable magazine in a semi would make it an AW (unless it has a bullet button). This is as far as I know.
I simply don't know if anything is interchangeable between the 9200 and 500. I also found once that 9 rounds of buckshot in a tube makes the gun a bit frontheavy for my taste. But then again I'm built like a matchstick.

Check out a 9200 A1 18" barrel (6 shot length). As far as adding capacity, you should be able to use most any extension that fits (check screw pitch).
For all things Mossberg custom consult Hans Vang of Vang Comp. The biggest issue with aftermarket magazine extentions is the springs. Who made the spring? Am I willing to trust my life to an "off shore" manufacture? No. But if it's just a competition gun, maybe.

I think I would rather have capacity over compactness. The crap thing is that I think I can't pistol grip it legally because its an auto. Which is stupid because I can cycle a pump faster than the action on the auto can cycle. I might consider a six shot/18" conversion with the rifle stock and then just spring for a high cap. pump with pistol grip. For my money, a 12 gauge is the best all-around firearm ever developed, and I wouldn't use anything else in close quarter combat. This has been my hunting gun, but I would maybe change over to my vintage JC Higgins bolt action 12, which I am starting another thread on with questions.

          1) For extended mag tubes, Choate also sells several different sizes for the 5500/9200 series.

          2) Your semi can have a pistol grip as long it doesn't also have a collapsing/folding stock.

          3) The 9200 definitely isn't the fastest of semis, but if you can go faster on a pump, then you are the Bruce Lee of shotgunners! I can occasionally pull the trigger fast enough for the hammer to ride the bolt forward, but only on double-taps, never while emptying the mag.

Gross overstatement due to a running joke with buddies about how the 9200 is a "slow-motion" auto. I'm talking about a pistol only, not the goofy pistol and stock one-piecers. Is that still cool? Thanks for the info.

Haha... I see. Yeah, I remember shooting 150+ shells on a few occasions and having the cyclic rate slow down noticeably after maybe about 100 shells. I haven't had that happen since switching to Breakfree CLP on the mag tube.

Pistol grip only is fine as long as you comply with the barrel and overall length requirements. One thing to consider is that with the pistol grip, you might have some cycling issues due to the shotgun equivalent of "limp-wristing." I've found that when firing from the waist with my traditional stock pinned tightly against my side, I could not create enough recoil resistance for the energy from the shell to overcome the action spring and I would get a short-stroke every time. Now, this was with light birdshot and low-recoil slugs out of an 18.5" barrel. With a longer barrel and/or more powerful shells, it might have cycled just fine but I haven't had a chance to test this.

Actually, I'm wondering now if a pistol grip would have allowed a firm enough hold for the gun to cycle. Let me know if you get a chance to try.
