Mossberg 590A1 or Benelli SuperNova Tactical?

EDIT: Got the SuperNova (pics below). Thanks for the info.
    ___________________________

I'm looking to purchase a shotgun and I was really looking into the Mossy 500 and the Remy 870, but decided that I could spend a little more and get something that I really liked... either the 590A1 or the Benelli SuperNova Tactical. The way I looked at it was by the time I add a pistol grip 'rifle style' stock, mag extension, and GRS, I'd end up paying about the same (maybe a difference of $20 or $40, but that's negligible when spending around $500 anyways).

My friend and I were talking and he really thinks the Benelli is in a class of its own. Would you consider this the case and if so why exactly? I've held both guns and shot the Mossy 500 before. I like the feel of both guns with the pistol grip stock, but the Benelli feels a bit 'smoother' for me. The safety buttons and locations on either gun works for me (I didn't care for the 870 safety).

Which is a better buy for quality, reliability, and even holding its value in the long run? Anyone have specific preferences between the 2 shotguns? Right now I'm leaning towards the SuperNova and picking up a Nordic +2 mag extension. But the 590A1 holding 1 extra shell and only needing a pistol grip stock and GRS does look really tempting.

Here's the ad for the 590A1 at Turner's. They carry the SuperNova tactical w/pistol grip for $499 but said they'd knock off $20 (giving me a free shotgun bag) due to the "HD Shotgun sale" ad they were having.

The SuperNova is the best pump-action shotgun I have ever used. It is also a very well balanced gun and the ghost ring sights are really handy. I would go with the SuperNova. Besides, they can be purchased for around $500-$550 now anyways.

I personally like the M590A1. Nothing negative to say about the Supernova, just a matter of preference. The newer ones are coming with rifle-style sights, and that's a nice upgrade vs the bead sight on mine.

I'm happy with the A1, but I prefer the Ghost Ring site models for slugs.

The 500 and 590 are the best out there. You can get a 500 with 18.5" and 28" barrels for under 300 at big 5. Then check out ebay for tactical packages that fit 500 and 590s. actually, here's the link. for the best package i found.

the mossbergs are the most customizable shotguns out there which also means that the prices are going to be competative....not sure how much benneli offers but it's a solid gun. I say mossberg all the way though.

It really gets down to what is driving your decision. I think most people would agree that the Benelli is an overall superior piece of engineering ... but that's not the whole story.

Given that the Remington 870 and Mossberg 500/590 are famous for incredible reliability under very harsh use conditions, what drives the Benelli decision? (I am a Mossberg fan myself ... for whatever that's worth)

Benellis always seems to have a smoother action ... they FEEL great. I've noticed that people seems to constantly working on them to preserve that feel, whether or not its necessary for the sake of function I cannot say. By all accounts the Super Nova series is excellent in all respects.

One Benelli advantage is that it is capable of using everything from 2.75" to 3.5" shells, while the 870 and 590 use only 2.75" and 3" shells. If you have a need for 3.5" shells (can't imagine why in a tactical/HD shotgun) ... well, there you go.

For me it's Remington or Benelli. I can't get used to the safety location of the Mossbergs. Can't go wrong with either of the three.

i woulnt say the nova is in a class of its own but i would rate it right there with the 870. both of these actions are really smooth - MUCH SMOOTHER THAN THE 5XX MOSSBERGS. this being said i am in day 2 of the 10 day wait on a nova tact from big 5 on sale this week for 359, i also own a win 1300.

I like that the safety on the Mossberg is in a place where you pretty much can't accidentally trip it.

I never use the safety on my guns. My safety is no round in chamber unless I'm ready to fire. (And no, I have a well publicised dislike of Glocks, so this isn't Glockism coming out in me!)

I like my Benelli Super Nova very much, and feel that for the price (if you eventually want a pistol grip stock and GRS) it's actually a better value than a tricked out 870 or Mossberg because you can get those options from the factory for around $419 if your local gun shop is reasonable.

The only gripes that I have about the Super Nova is that you cannot mount a SureFire forend (currently not produced) and the length of pull on the stock is fairly long for my shorter arms. The receiver is also fatter than on a 870 or a Mossberg, so most breechlocks or Lifejacket systems won't fit.

I've been waiting a while now for accessories to start popping up on the market for this particular model pump shotgun, but honestly I don't think it's gonna happen other than a few accessories from TacStar or Mesa Tactical...

if you like the Benelli better, spend the extra cash and get the Benelli over the 590 or the 870. IDK why its so hard for people to choose a gun. Its quite easy, just buy what ever you like better and feels better to you. Who gives a crap what anyone else thinks (their opinoins are often very wrong)!

Since they are both fantastic shotguns I think this choice will come down to which one you like the controls on more and which one turns you on more to look at. I have the supernova and I freaking sleep with it I love that shotgun .

Thanks for the input. I went by Turners today and checked out both the 590A1 and the SuperNova tactical. After holding both and seeing how they feel, and how well they were built (craftsmanship), I ended up buying the SuperNova tactical w/pistol grip today. Got it for $499 with free bag ($479 after the cost of the bag). Besides the priceing being pretty good for me, I really liked the look, the feel, and the quality of the Benelli. The only thing that I didn't like was that it didn't hold as many shells, but nothing a mag extension won't fix. Don't get me wrong, the Mossberg is still an awesome gun. But choosing between the 2 on the spot, the Benelli just worked a lot better for me. If I have more funds later, I want to pick up a cheaper 500 and play around with that.
