    Indoor range ammo

Very noob question but better ask than never know. What 12gauge ammo can I use at an indoor range? Is the Walmart ammo sufficient in hitting paper targets or is there something else I should be looking at?

Every range is different. Some don't even allow long guns. Best bang for the buck is the walmart 100 packs for 20 something. I practice extensively with this stuff. Occasionally I practice with buck to remind myself of the recoil and resetting aim.

If you are a total noob start doing homework on patterning. Some slug practice will help refine you aiming too. I took a class with ITTS on shotgun usage. I would highly recommend that. My class had novices and LEO guys in it. At the end of the day you will have a respect for the amazing tool a shotgun is... and you will be born again hard!

The only indoor range I have ever been that allowed shotgun is Socal SharpShooters in Torrance. They let me use bird or buck but no slugs. They didnt require any special shotshell (frangible) but its always good to call and ask before you spend money on ammo.

Iron-sights has no limitations on ammo except for .300WM, .410 and anything steel-cased or steel-cored.

This. Ask the particular range(s) would want to go to about their policy.

Also note: some ranges may be fine with any lead buck/bird/slugs but almost every indoor range will prohibit any steel ammo. So that's another dimension to worry about.

It's extremely rare to find steel-based shotgun ammo. It's all lead or copper or nickel.

call the place up because some places only let you shoot their own ammo (which is marked up at a large rate!)

Since the OP is in Oceanside I'm 95% sure he's going to Iron-sights. They let you pop off any rounds. I even asked if bird, buck and slugs were OK, they said yes to all 3.

A lot of bird hunters use steel because in CA at least, you're not allowed to use lead to hunt certain kinds of birds for environmental reasons or whatever. You'll definitely see steel shotgun ammo if you go to a more hunting oriented gun store.

My range allows pretty much everything.

I'll typically take 10-15 rounds each of defense-quality slug and buck, and a few boxes of whatever cheap ammo I've got. This lets me test reliability with the stuff that counts without breaking the bank, then shoot lots of the cheap stuff for more practice.

With a new shotgun, I'll take an assortment of ammo to see what it likes and how it patterns.

For an indoor range in LA county (or anywhere from West LA to the IE, and down to Anaheim), the only indoor range that I've found that will allow shotguns is the LA Gun Club in downtown. And there you need to use their ammo (slugs) if you rent or bring your shotgun. 5 slugs for $4. No bird shot or buck shot allowed.

If anyone else has found an indoor range in LA county (preferably East LA or closer to IE or even north OC) that will allow shotguns, let me know. Most of them said no to shotguns when I asked.

Exactly my point. If you pick up ammo from Wal-mart/Cabelas/Turners/etc. or buy it online you're getting lead or copper or nickel shot. Steel shot is highly specialized and will say so on the box.
