Keep in mind that unless you live alone in the middle of nowhere, a slug fired indoors presents the significant danger of penetrating a lot of walls in your house and your neighborhood. An ideal HD round should get stuck in a bad guy, or in a wall or two, rather than bore a 1" hole through 100 yards of background and bedrooms. Part of the preference for shotguns for HD in the first place is that you can choose a shell that will do that job well.

Mine's an 870 Express with the long tube, but anything is better than nothing.

i second that! i have never fired a mossberg before, but then i got offered mine for cost and couldnt really pass that up. its a 500a, 12ga, 5+1, pump, 18 HD barrel and an interchangable 28" 'everything else' barrel. it seems to get the job done. never had any problems with it at all.

These are my home defense rigs, well two of them, anyway:

              N-frame-itis, there is no cure!
              AR-itis is just as bad!

do yourself a favor and go with the best shotgun ever made!!! the Mossberg 500. it's the only pump action shotgun to pass the military's testing and it's the only one being used in the field today. They did something crazy like bake it at 400 degrees for an hour, then freeze it, then bake it, then freeze it, etc. for so many times, then they dropped it from about 15 feet and it still fired. In fact it did that with the over 500 guns they tested and had less than one percent fail rate. It's extremely rugged, easy to use, easy to clean, and it's got more accessories options than any other shotgun out there!!!! you can pick one up from Big 5 for 279.00 plus tax and fees, and it comes with two barrels! a 18.5" home defense barrel, and a 28" vented rib barrel for hunting. you can get any kind of stock/pistol grip combo you want, and mount any kind of light/accessory you want on the thing. it is the crem-de-la-crem of shotguns. dont bother spending more money on a remington 870, get the best the first time and you wont have to buy anything else. (plus, the saftey is the best safety around!!)

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

                    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spring_(device)

This is a good article on springs. I can tell you from experience that their comparison to engine valve springs is correct in that they can go a million miles without any noticable fatigue. Now, when it comes to magazine springs, it probably depends on the maker of the magazine and the springs which were used. If a fully loaded magazine approaches the elastic limit of the spring, I imagine the spring won't last very long. If a magazine were designed so that when fully loaded the spring doesn't near the elastic limit the magazine can probably be left fully loaded for quite some time before any negative effects are noticed. Experience with a specific manufactuer is probably the best tell of the longevity of the magazine springs.

its a bit heavy but i do not leave the sling attached. that is only for a survival situation or something i bring when i use it as a "trunk gun"
