    Trap shooting question

How hard is it to shoot trap?
Would i look like a dumb as if I went out with my M1 super 90 or a M4 to shoot trap?
I watch it all the time and it looks very fun. I just hate looking like a newbi, lol.

Trap is easy enough for a beginner to have fun and do well, but hard enough that experts still miss once in a while.

The main thing to remember is to lead your shots, and become friends with some people that already shoot trap well and are willing to help a newbie out.

Heck, if you're around SLO area I'd be more than willing to teach you the basics some weekend.

BackNackk to your original question, if you are going to a range or club make sure your m1 or m4 meets their requirements. Most clubs say 20 or 22 inch barells are the minimum size and some won't let you have a pistol grip. Trap is easy enough to have fun at yet challenging enough to keep you coming back.

Some trapclubs rent shotguns. It's cheap and fun.

+1 on the 20-22" barrel minimum. The range in Martinez won't let you shoot trap with that 18.5" barrel that's for sure.

My first experience with trap was like 30-50% success rate. I like skeet better preferably since I normally shoot by myself. If you are going with 2-3 friends and nobody is waiting on you, trap is WAY more fun though.

even if you cant hit the target, its still lots of fun. i shoot singles now and again, i like to use my old break action 20ga. i probably look like a goofball, but its just less complicated. no shell catchers or anything needed. just a pocketful of birdshot and a shotgun with a hammer... best stuff ever!

For me it's easy but for my brother-in-law it's impossible, he's more of a tactical guy without any military experience. Like a rancher with no cattle.
Your guns won't make you look dumb, my brother-in-law has a O/U and a 870 Express, two great guns for trap and he still looks like a dumb asss.

it's fun, it's not hard, but there is a feel for it you'll need to pick up. remember it's pointing and not aiming, you'll need to learn about follow through, and the difference in shooting those that are going directly away from you vs. those that are crossing side-to-side more.
I started shooting with trap, and got to be pretty solidly 23-25 every round in about a year.
take a lesson the first time out if you're worried about looking silly, it will help you get oriented to the rules and to getting the shots the way you want. then just go shoot regularly and take a lesson when you plateau and aren't progressing.
                          trap's fun, go shoot!

the most successful shooters use longer barrels and full chokes.

We took a buddy of ours, who is a championship rifle shooter and had never shot a shotgun, to the trap range. In three rounds he didn't hit ten birds. He couldn't get the aiming thing out of his head. So don't feel bad if you don't bust them all on your first try. If you like it, keep trying and you'll get better.
