Preventing rust on 870 express?

So, my 870 express is, far and away, my most rust prone blaster. It seems to develop mild surface rust in a matter of days if I don't wipe off every single fingerprint before I put it away.

Furthermore, I left my 28" barrel in my car for a week (forgot it was there) and it was disgustingly rusty.

I normally wipe the gun down with CLP and a silicone rag.

Is there a longer lasting/more permanent method to preventing rust on the finish of this thing?

Get yourself a silicone impregnated shotgun sock like this one:

Keep it OUT of a foam lined case as some foams will retain moisture. Especially if you live coast-side like you do.


If you're gonna keep it in a case, a small bag/can of dissicant would help things dry out a bit as well.

I live near the coast too. Keep every gun and magazine coated with oil and check periodically. I've got 6 handgun mags that I need to refinish because they rusted out when I wasn't looking.

+1 on keeping things lightly coated with oil near the coast. The silicone socks are a big help as well.

Where the ocean is close by corrosion is your constant enemy, no matter how bright and sunny the day might be.

Gee, wonder why they suggest Rem oil...
I use also CLP on my 870 and use q-tips to work it into the nooks and crannies on the vent rib barrel. Sounds anal, but also remember to oil the screws on the butt pad. Those holes in the pad are perfect moisture traps.

The silicone rags do nothing in my experience. I use a piece of a leather car shammy soaked in CLP and wipe down all guns and mags prior to storage. Depending on where you live (humidity) and how you store will depend on how often a oil wipe down is needed. For me, when living in an area where the humidity was high in the winter required a wipe down twice a month. Otherwise rust would grow.

Short of getting the gun Duracoated or nickle plated, is there some sort of inexpensive, clear protective coating that I can apply to the finish that would prevent rust from appearing in most situations?

My suggestion won't be very expensive, but it will be very time consuming and not for the faint of heart.

Why not try parkerizing it?

The prep work will take some time and be the hardest part. You can strip down the old bluing using Naval Jelly and other stripping compounds, then degrease the hell out of the part. Next get some high quality parkerizing solution and let that stuff go to work.

As part of the prep work, you'll have to completely strip the gun down to its parts. Luckily, the 870 is very simple and has few parts. The receiver/mag tube is basically one piece and you can parkerize it as one. The barrel is another, and then you've got the slide, bolt and bolt carrier. The bolt carrier is stainless though, so you shouldn't have to do anything there. You don't need to touch the trigger group, just remove it from the receiver and grease the important parts. You'll have to strip the bolt to it's pieces, but that shouldn't be too hard either.

After it's done being parkerized you'll have a surface finish MUCH better than the crappy surface bluing that the 870's ship with, and you'll get a finish that will actually hold in oil to prevent rusting.

Eezox really works great on my 870 Express.

Not only it protects the surface from rusting, it also serves as lubricant and cleaner. A rather easy (spray, wait, wipe) and inexpensive solution.

Wow... parkerized. Didn't think it was a possibility to do it at home. Thank goodness I purchased my shotgun parkerized from the factory.

I had a few little rust problems on my 870 receiver, but after a couple applications of Ezzox, it hasn't shown any rust in over 2 years. I use Ezzox on all my firearms now, and it just flat out works!!! You should see how it prevents finger prints on glossy blue firearms like my S&W model 19!

try Corrosive X, this stuff is a lubricant and protector, hardcore stuff, use it on my deep sea fishing equiptment, spray it on before I go, when I come back there were times when I was so tired, I didn't wrip the rods and reels down until two to three days, no rust , no corrosion, great product... sea water is very tough on metal, this stuff protect

you can pick it up in your tackle store, I think Sport Chalet also carries it
