Any old time cutts comp guys around?

I know the old cutts compensators went out of vogue at the same time fins disappeared from the American automobile, but I like them.

I like them because they work. I picked up a used model 11 (Browning auto-5 clone) w/ a cutts installed, and it worked great (after replacing a cracked spring). made me a big fan of both the model 11 and the cutts.

I have just picked up another model 11, w/ two barrels. One w/ a ploy choke, another with a 30" plain barrel. the Poly barrel is numbers matching, so I'm planning on leaving it as is.

The 30" barrel is going to the WECSOG chop shop at some point. I'd like to put a cutts on this as well, permanently mounted as close to 18" as is possible on the recoil operated model 11. My question is, does anyone know if there is a limit (other than the fore-end, and the ATF mandated 18" minimum) to how far back a cutts can go on the model 11 (auto-5/ savage 720) type action? Will too short a barrel interfere with the recoil operated action?

I have an 18.5 in barrel 870 with a cutts... a thing of beauty... one should pattern them though... if not put on absolutely straight they have a tendency to shoot off center... mine shoots high.. which is good for rising birds etc... and they are loud... but I have never felt the need to change it out...take the choke off for home defense and the barrel looks enormous from the business end too....

18.5 to the cutts, or to the end of the cutts? Now I'm looking for two compensators!?!

I would look at getting one of the spreader chokes to protect those internal threads though.

I have one of my Dad's shotguns that has a Cutt's on it. He had it hand engraved by an Artisan in Japan when he was stationed there after WWII. I have never shot it but I suppose it would be fun and who knows maybe I'll want to find a Cutt's for my 870.

I've owned a few in both 20ga and 12ga in the past. There was one in 20ga, I believe it was a Ted Williams that was really nice.
