How did your shotgun start out? It does not have a chrome bolt so was it an Express? I hate the plastic finish on my HD gun.........I will replace the stocks with wood soon. I assume that the metal work is not as polished before the plastic finish is applied as if it were going to be blued.

No I used a scotch brite pads and 0000 steel wool so smooth and polish.

It started out like you see in the last picture, its an express.

I have an 870 Wingmaster in .410 that is blued and ugly. Previous owner stored it in a case and in got rust all over it. It's only cosmetic but I wouldn't mind giving it a face lift.

I didnt use a cold blue, its a sponge on brown

275 degrees in oven and apply till it stops sizzling

a finish has only two functions in my humble opinion. 1. Protect the metal 2. be durable enough to last. If you understand this then Parkerizing is the the finish you would opt for. Many people add a 3rd demension to this. 3. appearance....... for the guy with the poly coat finish, you are FUBAR. that mess will peel off and the undercoating is a light coat of the applied matte finish of the Express. Keep that poly coat on there as long as you can or strip the weapon and refinish it. You should keep a small bottle of clear enamel or epoxy based paint in you shooting bad so if you scratch the poly coat you can touch it up, if you don't touch it up it will start peeling off.
