If it is a new express model with the matte finish, often referred to as parkerized, they are prone to rusting for some odd reason. Be sure to give it a liberal coat of Rem Oil or similiar. Inspect it and wipe it down every couple of months if you live near the coast. Inland where there is less humidity it is less of a problem from my experience.
If its a blued model, same thing applies, only you don't have to be quite as methodical about it.
If its new or used, its good to disassemble and lube it up generously, particularly the fire control and inside the barrel.

Lube it properly, store with silica gel or a bag of silicon kitty litter.

        Check it once a month.

I have an old upright single door freezer that doesn't work, but still seals. I got it free. I put a lock on it and store all my firearms in it along with a good deal of ammo. It will hold 13 rifles comfortably or you can crowd in 26 and ammo. It is always about 25 degrees cooler than the storage area and silicon kitty litter keeps things dry.

Obviously you want to be able to use the shotgun if needed without having to strip cosmoline off it for an hour. i like using MD labs XF-7 grease on the firearms that sit for a long time

Spec an AR-15 from lower to optic. Real-time compatibility checks, live retailer pricing, save-and-share builds. Free tools, honest tier rankings, 50-state legal data.

The stuff stays put, and doesn't evaporate or harden with time. It also doesn't attract much dirt or carbon, and makes cleaning a snap. I have 2 870Express models. One is decked out for HD and the other is stock for Trap, Skeet or hunting. I keep both lubed with XF-7 so they are ready to go any time.

You may also want to control the humidity of your storage space. Dessicants, and dehumidifiers are a good idea if you live in a very humid area.

The barrel would be the first place I'd put it on, since it has the most exposure. Inside and out.

Is it a good idea to stored my shotgun in a case??? The case said for transport only, do not store for long term.

Yes, a case is fine as long as you add dessicant and maybe wrap it in a gun sock for preservation.
