Please help me,
I bought a new marine magnun today and the book says it will hold 6+1 3" sheels but it will only take 5+1.

Is it a 18" or 20" barrel

If it is a Remington 870 Marine Magnum with an 18" barrel, it will not hold 6-3" shells. That is 18" of shells, where is the spring going to go? Don't forget that there is the follower and spring retaining cap to consider as well. I could see 6-2 3/4" shells fitting in that amount of space. Just a guess here but, perhaps they rated it using the standard shell size?

the 18" remingtons with a +2 shot extension only hold six 2-3/4 " shells in the tube.

having 6 decent 2-3/4's loads is preferable to five 3" magnum loads since 2-3/4's is enough to dispatch just about anything outside of africa.

if you are shooting magnum steel at large water fowl at 50 yards, then you are breaking fish and game code 'cause you can only have 2 shells in the mag.

Well, mine must have a space vortex in it then, because I just re-checked and there are 7 3in shells in it.

Thanks for the help guys. The gun is an 870 18". The manual says it will take 6 3" shells in the mag tube but I was not thinking and it makes sense that 6x3=18 and where would the spring go. I originally bought triple buck but I am going to go with the more capacity and buy some 2 3/4" shells.


P.S. does anyone have experience with those expanding shells supposed to be like hollowpoints.

My apologies I should have checked back sooner.

I thought someone would have clued in that I was joking. A 3" shell is actually 2.5" in length when crimped. Just like a 2 3/4" is actually 2 1/4" when crimped. The crimp eats a 1/2". Check with a measuring tape and you will see what I mean. Perhaps your magazine spring was cut longer than standard causing it to stack. New springs are always tight at first. Blackwater OPS is correct it should take 6 3" shells in the magazine and one in the chamber for 7 total. My apologies if I threw anyone a curve with my last post.

My marine magnum holds 6 in the magazine tube, although sometimes the spring gets bunched up. Try unloading and loading several times and recheck the tube spring.

I had to load up mine and leave it for a while..

Then the springs relaxed and all was well.
