Big 5 Mossberg Deal this month?

I check the Big 5 page regularly to see what kind of deal s they have since I've been considering getting a shotgun.

I spot this today and was wondering what model Mossberg this is.

    I think it's a 500 Persuader since it does have a 20" barrel and holds 8 shots.

Can anyone confirm? Maybe a model number ?

I have one and been hunting with it for 10 years without any problems. It is still one of my favorite shotgun to use and I own 2 others that costs many times more.

Why? I've been hunting with an old 500 since the late 70's. I've purchased several 500 combo kits over the years and either traded or sold them for a profit at different points in time. I remember the old combo kits came with wood stocks, PGs and heat shields for about $150 back in the mid 80's. So after +30 years of never having a problem with a 500, you're trying to tell me that they are bad guns? Please explain why you think that and how much actual experience you have with them.

I'll bet he's talking about this new generation of forearm and slide arms. They are different in that the arms are molded in to the forearm, probably for ease of manufacturing.

I'm not overly familiar with all the details of a shotgun, even these which I've spent many hours shooting as quals for base security.

Maybe someone more knowledgeable will chime in and give better info, but mine seems to work ok. But then again, it is a HD weapon, not pleasure shooting.

Would it be bter to get a Moossbrg from a local gun store? I figure that Big 5 woul have a better warranty if something was wrong with the gun.

The Persuader is the 500a. The deal at Big5 is good. And, there is nothing wrong that gun. People who say you can't hunt with a cylinder bore home defense shotgun are wrong. People who say you can't shoot clays with a cylinder bore home defense shotgun are also wrong. There are other shotguns that offer more in certain areas but for an all around shotgun that's inexpensive the deal at Big5 is good.

I'd like to hear a comparison between the mossberg and an 870. I like the 870, but only because I grew up using one. I have no actual basis to say that an 870 is better than the mossberg 500. I've handled both, and finish/aftermarket seem to be the only two differences I was able to note. can anyone chime in with a basic comparison. I have been saving for an 870 but if so many of you are satisfied with your 500's then I suppose I might look into one and save $100 along the way. Thanks all.

I own the shotgun in the link, and bought it from Mossberg in a sale just like this one. It is the Mossberg 500A Persuader. Mossberg's more specific numeration for this specific model with its particular features is item #50577.

As for the slide/forend issue with Mossbergs, at this point I do not know of any Maverick 88 one-piece action tubes being put on standalone 500's. This appears to be exclusive to the combo barrel packages, probably as a cost cutting procedure. However I have seen with my own two eyes combo Mossbergs from Big 5's that do still have genuine 500 tubes. At this point with no further evidence I am of the opinion that this was probably done to select batches, in recent times (last few years) and may not be on all Mossberg 500 combos you come across.

The shotguns like the one posted in the link, including the one I own, have not been affected by this change in Mossberg's policy as far as I know. I have yet to see a 50577 with the one-piece forend assembly.
