unfired 870 lying around

New guy here...

I've got a Remington 870 wingmaster produced around 1982--never fired. I'm considering options to make it a more useful tool since I do not hunt or shoot trap/skeet.

OPTIONS:

Send it in for a defensive conversion to:
A) Wilson, B) VangComp, C) Nighthawk D) Other(?)

OR

Sell it and apply funds to a newer defensive shotgun
Brand (X).

Put a WTT (want to trade) add on the for sale section of this site.
You might need to pony up a few bucks to make the trade, but you just might find someone with a tacti-cool shotgun like you want that is looking for a trade.

Personally I would keep it. Go buy a barrel and a mag tube if you want to be all tactical. personally I think you're $$ ahead by using the shotgun you have now than the hassle of selling then buying another shotgun.
i think the 870 is a great platform. I woudl just go look for a barrel and a mag tube and any other tactical stuff you want to hang on it.

If you really really want a HD shotgun and if you're in orange county Ill trade you for my Mossberg 500 home defender ( its the 8 shot model) and 2 boxes of buckshot. I have both the regular stock and a pistol grip stock both black plastic
it still in great condition
I need a extra loaner shotgun for when i take someone duck or bird hunting and my Home defender is not the best for that.

Anything else is pretty frivolous. Take the money you'd save and attend a defensive shotgun class.

You should take a hint from everyone trying to trade you their shotguns for your unfired Wingmaster.

The frank responses from post #5 and 6 just may have saved me a wad of cash (great advice).

I've been caught up in a national buying frenzy, not to mention the all out mad dash here in Ca., to "get (fill in the blank) while you can".

Post #1--> Thanks, but wasn't baiting for trades--just posing a question and I hadn't thought about the "keep it and use it" suggestions made here.

And, I have to admit, I was blown away by some of the potential costs of third party modifications of this 870. *IF* members posted about the benefits and value of mods by one of the above three I may have been convinced.

Curious to see what others may post here.

Joe, leave the Wingmaster in the condition it is in. Go find a basic 870 HD for home defense. If it absolutly a situation where you don't want the weapon as it is and want it converted then beware of the market out there as there are to many frills and mess being put on these weapon. You stated you wanted a practical weapon so if you convert this one then Keep it simple. Thing is, a like new Wingmaster barrel, stock and forend is worth more then some guys are trying to trade you for your entire weapon. If you know anything about the auction sites, sell those items and build a weapon around your receiver.What you get for the barrel and stocks will more then pay for the items you add if you keep it basic and you break even.

Keep it and do little else but change out the barrel and get ammo you can shoot reliably and accurately.

I have a Remington Wingmaster and a Police Magnum, so I don't really need to do any mods, but, then again, I spend too much money on my hobby.

What I did do is:
Bought an extra tactical barrel, 18.5" - <$100
Bought an extra deer barrel, rifled slug 20" - <$100
Bought an extended magazine - <$80
Bought a tactical folding stock - <$200, it was cool looking

If you needed anything else, it would be to check with a Gunsmith if you needed to modify the stock to fit you better. For me, I need a shorter stock. The length of pull (LOP) is just a bit too long.

These all could go on the Wingmaster if I wanted to make her a tactical home defense weapon. The beauty of the Wingmaster vs. 870 Express, the WM has a much smoother action, it's more refined, and has better parts, IMHO. To go with anything else is a downgrade.

I had one of those too. I bought an old Wingmaster (circa 1960s) about twenty years ago at a pawn shop for less than a hundred bucks. About a year ago I sent it, and an 18" barrel that I had laying around for a few years, to Wilson Combat for one of their custom rebuild jobs. I kept the long barrel that was on the gun for future use.

What I got back was what you see, completely rebuilt with sights, button safety, mag. extension, new stocks, sling mounts and new parkerizing so everything matches.

All for around $400.00 as I recall. I'm very happy with it.
