Mossberg 930 question...

This is going to be my first shotgun and I'd like for it to be used for HD and hunting. I've did some research and came down to the Mossberg 930. I found that there are special combo deals for the 930(not SPX) that comes with an 18.5" for HD and a 28" for hunting. The combo deal don't come with ghost ring and fiber optic sites. My main question is if I purchase a 930SPX and a 28" barrel(w/ fiber optic front site) seperatly, will my aim still be accurate since the SPX front sight sits much higher compared to the regular fiber optic front sight of the 28" barrel?

If you use the 28" bbl with the SPX rear sight you will shoot low. You would need to remove the rear sight and base to hunt with the longer bbl. I also have thought about getting the 930 combo. I woulden't worry about ghost ring sights for HD, they are cool and all but for decades the military and law inforcements "tactical sights" were and in many cases are still a plain old bead sight. I didn't know that the rear base is removable, if so I can use the 28" with the fiber optic front sight just like a bead sight. Cool!

If you buy the combo that doesn't come with ghost ring sights, you should be able to add them if you want to pretty easily (albeit not cheaply). Basically Mossberg appears to be using a picatinny rail with an LPA ghost ring rear slapped on it, as well as an LPA front sight. Suffice to say, you can buy LPA sights separate from the shotgun, though they aren't cheap, and if you do, you would have to get the front sight installed permanently unless you go with one of the "non-permanent" solutions LPA has. You can also buy a replacement 28" barrel seemingly for under $200 (or 150 as the case may be). Expect to spend at least $250 on just the LPA sights if you buy them separately (not including installation costs) and you will probably pay more like $300 (again, no install costs included).

Given the prices of the SPX it may be a better deal (if you want ghost rings) to get the SPX and then get a 28" barrel. But, strictly speaking the only major advantage of the ghost rings is that you can get tritium inserts for them. Probably, you won't ~need~ ghost rings, but if you want them, SPX + replacement barrels is probably a better deal from what I can tell.
