    870 ejector issue

I've been a Mossberg guy for many years but recently picked up an 870 "Security" from Big 5 to give one a try.

I put a number of rounds through it today and noticed that the ejector barely managed to get the hulls out the port. A handful of times, I managed to catch an empty hull with the bolt while cycling it forward effectively creating a stovepipe.

I've never had this issue with my Mossbergs. Is this typical of the 870 or a fluke of this particular gun? If it is typical, can the ejector be upgraded to make sure the empties are launched rather than dribbled out of the gun?

I just got a new 870 and have only put about 50 rounds through it but have had no problems with ejection. Quite the opposite for me actually I can throw empties about 10 yards down range. Definitely a problem with your particular one that I'd have checked out.

Sounds like something needs to be tuned. Both my 870's launch empties.

I believe it's atypical. Do you run the action to the rear quickly or slowly?

It is not typical. If you are racking the weapon correctly it should be ejecting correctly. An 870 is made to rack back hard and slam home hard. the 870 and 11-87 are the same weapon except the 11-87 has a gas piston that racks it back and a heavy action spring to send it home. I only bring this up so that people understand they can not hurt an 870 racking it hard as you can not rack it back harder then that gas piston nor ram it home harder then that heavy action spring. If you are racking it like you have a pair and it is not ejecting the spent round then you have an issue with the weapon. check the ejctor spring and make sure it is not loose. If it is, a guick trip to any gun smith to tighten it up is better then sending the entire weapon in for warrenty and not having it for months. However if it is broken the send it in.

I rack it pretty hard and fast. I'll have it checked out, thanks!

Big 5 has a 30-day, I believe. I wouldn't screw with it, I think I'd just go to Big 5 first and get a replacement.

I've had it longer than 30 days, just finally got a change to put it through its paces.

Mine new one did have a problem about the 70th round but it was different. The ejector tore 1/4" off the edge of the hull rim, we had to drive the shell out from the muzzle. I cleaned it and brass brushed the chamber vigorously...thought I might find a rough spot in the chamber but it is fine and has not done it again. Maybe there was some FOD in it? These new guns are not as well finished as my old Wingmasters and seem to take a little shooting to settle in.

Argonaut brought up a good issue as the extraction issue has to be perfect for the ejection to work properly. Polishing the chamber will always help but may not correct this issue. Do it anyway as Remington has slipped on this issue and polishing it is a good idea. I made a home made polishing tool You can see it at www.aiptactical.com find the "how to video" tube extension kit in the drop down menu of customer service. Click on the video and you will see the tool at the 3.30 minute mark of the video. It is simply a wooden dowl with a pad of stainless steel wool stretched over it and taped off. It looks like a large Q-tip. Use a longer dowl and you can use this same tool to polish the bore also. I learned this from Sgt Joe Eddy back in 1979 so all the recent post by guys claiming to have invented this are BS. Joe knew how to save money from high dollar cleaning supplies. Even his brass polisher was "red neck tech" put the brass in a "Charles Chip" can with rice in it, duct tape the lid on and let it roll around in the back of his truck for a few days. Perfectly clean brass every time.
