Why is .410 ammo so expensive?

Most popular makes and models of shotguns are available as either a 12 ga. or a 20 ga. Not all 20's are on down-sized receivers, though. 16's and 28's are the rarer gauges, although in some makes and models even that isn't true. The problem with .410, as mentioned several times above, is the lack of economy of scale in purchasing, production, and distribution compared to the more popular guages.

Not sure I agree with this. There are many many models that use 20 ga. Sure, not as many as 12ga, but there are still tons to choose from.

+1 SLO. I see all the guages being used both at the range and field.
