    Mossberg 590 Mag Tube Problem

So I kept my Mossberg 590 loaded with 8 rounds in the tube. We have some visitors along with some children staying with us for a week, so I unloaded it. The last round doesn't pop out. The spring doesn't have enough force because it remains compressed partially. Do I need a new spring? If so, where do I get one? Do you think Mossberg will send me a replacement for free?

Just get a Wolff replacement spring, extra power. Just order it from online right now. Or get a Wilson extra power spring, etc. All the extended tube capacities are roughy the same length.

While I was waiting for my replacement spring to come in, it took my worn original and stretched it out, then restuffed into gun so I had a functioning weapon, while I waited the day or so for the new spring.

Stretch the spring back out for a quick fix. I did and it works just fine

I consider Mossberg's factory mag springs the only weak point of the 590a1. They look like they are meant for 20-gauge tubes and they're way too short. I don't know what they were thinking. The spring in my 930 SPX is considerably beefier, though it's also on the short side. Regardless, I replace all my mag springs with extra-power ones from Wolff. $5 each for priceless peace of mind.

Most folks recommend that your mag spring be 10 to 16 inches longer than the magazine tube assembly. For a pump, and especially the 20" 590, I'd cut it to no more than 10 inches over. Wolff makes a 590-specific version, but I don't know what's different about it and I didn't want to try it sight unseen. I just used the universal 12-gauge spring on my friend's 590A1. It worked great. Since you have the 20" version, cut your spring to about 30" then use pliers to bend the ends of the spring so that it forms a flat ring (doesn't have to be perfect, but at least bend it so that you don't have the end of coil protruding out). If you find you can't load 8 shells anymore, cut the spring back bit by bit until you can.

Good info, Thanks a alot to everyone.
One question- how do I take out the spring retaining cap? It feels like its really stuck.

          nevermind, got it.
btw my spring is really messed up, its all twisted and bent out of shape

You have to pry the metal spring retainer out with a screw driver or something similar. Be careful not to bend the lip of your mag tube.

Get the Wolff universal 12Ga spring not the one they offer for the 590 with tapered ends. The tapered end springs can cause reliability problems. The universal spring will come 40" long and cut it too 28" - 30" to be able to get 8 in the tube with most brands of shells.

Mossberg is now using better quality springs in their shotguns because of the complaints they were receiving on the tapered end springs they were using. The ones they are using now look like Wolff springs and they probably are.

              Watch that spring popping out.

I drap a heavy cloth over it and use hand pressure to ease the spring out. Sometimes it still slips and goes flying.

Thus, I learned the trick to drape a heavy cloth over it while removing.

On a different tangent here, but are you sure it's not just the cartridge stop/interupter sticking? Sometimes a person has to fiddle with that last round when unloading by hand. It will chamber perfectly when you slide the action back, however it has a tendency to stick from the force of the interuptor and/or stop, depending. The last round almost always seems tricky to unload on a Mossberg until you get the process down.

Hope this doesn't seem like I'm talking down to you. If you're sure it's not the above, by all means replace the spring. They can be had cheap and it's not terribly hard to replace, especially on the 590. If you opt to replace the mag tube, I recommend a drop of medium loctite when you screw it back in.

Yep, its the spring. Both ends of it are bent out of shape. I straightened it and stretched it out, it works for now. Wolff spring on the way.

nice, I'll send them an email. My stock spring is still a little crooked on both ends, but it works.
