Initial Experiences with Beretta 1301 Mod 2 - after decades on a Mossberg 500

Background I have been involved with firearms since the age of 4 (Remington 514 single shot) and since then have almost six decades of owning and experience with most every type of common firearm. My sole, do-all shotgun since the mid 1980s had been a basic 12ga Mossberg 500 pump, but I picked up a Browning O/U [recreational skeet/pheasant] and an Ugartechea 20gs SxS [dove/quail] about 10 years ago. I had only tried an auto-loader shotgun a few times, and while fun, never felt the urge to buy one. Recently that changed, and I bought a 2024 Beretta Tactical 1301 Mod 2, code J131M2TT18 (thanks Lava Dog Fire & Police Supply in Plymouth, CA https://www.lavadogfireandpolicesupply.com/). The 1301 will replace the 500 as my HD shotgun.

1301 Initial Experience a few days after receipt, I went to pattern it and generally practice live operation/manual of arms, though I had been becoming familiar with it at home with dummy rounds.

Features Grip and forend texture is very aggressive, I used gloves most of the time. I really like the semi-flat trigger; not sure why, though it seemed quicker positioning my finger. The ghost rings sight are fast and accurate (I am used to them on rifles). It came with only one choke (Cyl) but I had ordered an IC for it. The raised position of the now-standard pro lifter was about the only similarity to my 500 and made it very easy and fast to reload. There was good surface/space for positioning a match saver.
Loading/Unloading As shipped, my 1301 would not take 7 shells, at least not the ones I have laying around nor my dummies. A supposed fix is to remove the plastic tube plug spring retainer (which allows field tripping without having the fight the spring), I have not tried that yet. Unloading the tube without cycling shells through the chamber is a two handed affair, but efficient...hold the lifter up and pull up on the bolt release and one pops out, repeat. I did learn how to ghost load it, tedious but doable. I also heard about Benelli Carry which is just ghost loading without a shell chambered.
Shooting - Recoil felt surprisingly mild. The fit, balance, and handling suit me. It does cycle crazy-fast, though I?m way to slow to maximize its potential. In goofing around trying some clays out of a vintage flinger (by myself so it was an exercise in getting a good toss, plopping the thrower on the table, then repositioning my strong hand and acquiring the targets), none of the 20 clays hit the ground unbroken, though about a third required two shots. I was using dove/quail loads and the IC choke for that. Also, it would not consistently cycle Winchester AA target loads (I have a stockpile of them). I will try them later once I have several hundred rounds through it.
Patterning I only had two types of 00 Buck, both 9-pellet ? Rio and Federal Personal Defense Force X2, and brought along some obsolete (lead shot) turkey loads. I also had along my 500 with fixed Cyl for a baseline. I set up at 10 yards, and got the following odd 00 results, in inches:
    500 Rio = 5.0, Fed = 6.0
    Cyl Choke Rio = 8.5, Fed = 7.5
    IC Choke Rio = 8.0, Fed = 6.25
I have since ordered a Mod choke, and will retest the above along with other 00 Buck I can find locally. I really want the Fed x2 to pattern well, but if it does not, I will try Flight Control and other plated/buffered rounds rather than trying more $50+ chokes.
Funny bits more than a few times I caught myself trying to operate the non-existent slide, thumb safety, and under-action bolt release.

Lastly, and this actually shook me, after cleaning-up the 1301 at home, I grabbed it one-handed by the action and in doing so my hand hit and disengaged the oversized safety. I immediately put it down, stood back, and thought WTF! I cannot recall ever having a safety disengage unintentionally, regardless of how the firearm was being handled. Anyway, given that, I will only store the 1301 in Benelli Carry condition... full tube, one on the lifter, chamber clear.

If you have a Mod 2 1301, I would like to hear your firsthand perspectives.

PS - I saw online at least one problem with the QD cups being configured too deep so as to not lock-in; mine work as intended (though I do not like the rear location and may add one to the side, I do not know that I will typically sling it).

Drop kick the factory buttstock and install a Magpul SGA stock. It has a QD on both sides, a better grip angle, accommodates 3 different cheek risers and the Airtech buttpad (10805).

I just got a 1301 Mod 2. I noticed that low brass federal bird/target or low brass Aguila 00 Buck fits 7 in the tube. High brass Winchester Super X 00 Buck just is not able to fit the 7th round, just barely misses the latch to hold it. The Winchester slugs high brass is not even close to fit 7 rounds.

Only shot slugs and it ran perfectly, recoil is fine, didn’t really notice a bog difference from a pump, though the pump was a little heavier.

Just an ammo note...In my Benelli m4 I can load seven rounds of Federal Law Enforcement 00 Buck, w/Flight Control, 8 pellet. But I can only load six rounds of the 9 pellet version. The 9 pellet rounds are just ever so slightly longer.

That AirTech butt pad makes shooting my 1301 like nothing even with slugs, it makes a significant difference in perceived recoil. OceanBob is the man, he made me buy mine and I love it.

Capacity - I measured the rounds I was using, they are 2 3/8 inches. While I've seen claims that removing the plastic spring retainer plug allows that 7th to fit, from my measuring that still might not allow 7, and....I don't want to wrestle with the spring every time when field stripping for routine cleaning.

QD on stock - I'm not interested in spending another $100+ (and $ on a special adapter) to replace something that doesn't need replacing just to add a QD in my preferred location. And, while I have an SGA on my Mossberg 500, I'm not a huge fan of the ergos, and I find it heavy and a bit clunky. I'll simply get a QD socket and place it where I want on the OEM stock.

Shell Follower - I wanted a high visibility/tactile-checkable follower but in researching what's out there, they seem fraught with issues - too long, spring won't fit inside cup, can cause a shell jamb, etc. So following a tip on another forum, I drilled my OEM follower and gave it the red Sharpie treatment. I know the sharpie won't last, but it will work for now.

Sights - I am considering this front sight hood; I'm waiting to hear back from them about the actual diameter (one reviewer opined that it could be smaller): https://www.blitzkriegcomponents.com...i-shotgun.html

              Which rounds were those?
That seems pretty short, unless you had some old 2 1/2" rounds laying around.

              Disregard the previous question.
It's not short, but my IQ was a little low when I asked.
              2 & 3/4 inches is after being fired, 2 & 1/2 inches unfired.
1/8 of an inch is no big deal.

Was curious so I measured a factory fold crimped 2.5 target load. was maybe a hair over 2 1/8.The only factory 2.75 buck I had on hand is s&b 12 pellet 00, which is roll crimped and has a total length of 2.5. rough measurements because my calipers are packed away at the moment.

I fitted an Airtech 10817 on the factory stock and works great.

Ran a bunch of buck shot, slugs and birdshot through it with some friends. Everybody was surprised at how light it is and muted recoil on the 1301. The Mod2 handguard and stock grip texture is very aggressive and works well.

I was surprised how fast I can shoot it and stay on target with slugs and buck shot.

Shooting clays was a challenge though, the sights were very distracting and I have never done it before. Compared to full length shotgun with a simple bead it really was a struggle, but figured out a way to shoot clays that actually worked.

I ran mine with the the IC choke that it cam with instead of the cylinder choke that was installed at the factory. Just used Winchester X 00B buffered 9 pellet loads, and it patterned predictable with 8" or so at 10-12 yds and 12" or so at around 15 yds. Which should be fine for HD.

The more I shoot it the more I like it.

FNGGlock - good to see a fellow owner of the Mod 2! I will be going shooting tomorrow with my daughter and a friend, clays will be on the menu in earnest. Though I did well on my first attempt at (hand thrown) clays, albeit a small number, tomorrow will be interesting. And given how relatively soft shooting it is, I've not even thought about recoil reduction...but that may change after tomorrow!

We were just using hand thrown clays, but got some good distance and velocity most of the time. The one guy had a full length semi with a bead, which was a lot easier and simpler to hit the clays with. The 1301 was definitely sub optimal for clays, but it worked for that environment.

Where the 1301 excelled at was engaging multiple targets quickly with hard hitting shot. The transitions were very quick, even with a light mounted on the front. Tested it at night and it worked great to hit various targets quickly. Much faster than trying to run a pump.

update on 1301 Tac Mod 2 capacity & patterning

So I had an opportunity to take the 1301 Tac Mod 2 out again this week to try more HD shells - [info from the packaging] Hornady Critical Defense 8-pellet 00 "VersaTite" wad - 1600 fps, Aguila single 0 [0B] 1.375 oz - 1275 fps, and Rio 12-pellet #1 buck - 1345 fps (hey, it was on sale so worth a try). None were plated pellets.

Capacity - the Hornady and Aguila are both 2.250" OAL, the Rio is is almost 2.50". In my earlier post I mentioned Federal Personal Defense Force X2 00 being 2.375". Turns out that I can cram six 2.50", and one 2.375 shells into the mag tube...they just barely fit*.

Patterning [10 yards] - I was now using a Modified Beretta factory choke, and the results were great. Both the Hornady and Aguila were very tight (4.5'ish and 6'ish respectively)...the Rio was about 10", reasonable, but I want tighter.

My conclusions (with the limited data I have) - *given that I want to use the full 7-round capacity for HD, I have loaded 6 Hornady Critical Defense 00, with a Federal Personal Defense Force X2 00 being the 7th, and one "ghost loaded" onto the lifter (I like the split-pellet concept hence those would be my first two shots). The Federals will also fill the match-saver and 2-shell soft side-saddle.

I hope this information is helpful.
