If he shot it 15 years ago. Did he use Black Powder shells? If not i don't know if I would shoot the Shotgun. Unless he has BP shells to shoot.

Since when was the Model 12 designed for black powder?

It was shot with modern 2 3/4" shells.

Early M12's were all nickle steel designed for smokeless powder. If it looks good try it. I wouldn't shoot anything hot (there is no need to anyway) but trap loads would be fine I am sure. Take a look at the chamber for cracks or deterioration and make sure that the breech bolt locks up tight but I have never seen any that looked really bad.

Some 16's were chambered for 2-9/16".

I have a Model 12, built 1918, that I have fired probably 200+ modern shells through with no problem. Biggest issue is finding a decent supply of 16 ga. shells...

Just make sure it is clean and in good mechanical condition, then fire away.

FWIW, I'm up for a trade for a good 12 ga. lever action, for cowboy gun use, if anyone is looking for a great vintage M12. this is a 90 point gun...

You should check on the value as a collectable, you may be amazed at it's worth and not want to shoot it.
I believe it was also the first year that the Model 12 was chambered for 16g, they are strong shotguns and shoot great.
If it is a 2 9/16 chamber the only problem may be the ejection port being shorter and the 2 3/4 shells may cause a FTE.

We need pictures to drool over.

Excellent, typical patina (darkened with time) but no dings or gouges and even coloration...PM me if you want pics.
