    Benelli M4 questions

    Hello,

I was browsing Turner's Sales and they are listing the Benelli M4 for sale soon. I was initially looking at a Remington 11000 with a pistol grip, but after doing some research the Benelli is meeting all my perceptions of quality.

For those who have had experience with the Benelli M4:

Does is do well for shooting clays?

I was thinking of using it at Tripple B's trap/skeet range every now and then and (hopefully never in a situation to have to use it) for home defense.

The gun comes with ghost-ring sights and that leads me to think they are not the greatest for shooting flying clays.

Let me know what you think.

    thanks.

p.s. What's trap and what is skeet?

Not much difference between trap and skeet that I know of. Trap has 5 positions and skeet has 8..I think. Plus trap has only one place where they launch while skeet has two. As far as the M4 is concerned, it's a great shotgun but a bit pricey. Not the best choice for trap/skeet shooting as the barrel is only 20" but I'm sure you would still have a great time.

As far as shooting trap/skeet with ghost ring sights, it is possible. It's just not the best setup. Just for fun one day we took out my buddy's Mossberg 590 out to the trap range. I broke 16 of 25, he broke 20 of 25.

        Urban Dictionary - Trap

        Urban Dictionary - Skeet

Both are lame compared to sporting clays, now that is a mans game.

I have a M4 and if your looking for a sporting gun you may want to consider something else. The M4 is pure and simple a combat shotgun that is made to work best with 00/slug type rounds.

I have tried lighter birdshot type loads and while they will work, the gun can be finicky with them. I have noticed that as you shoot more heavy stuff it has become easier to cycle the lighter stuff too, but it isn't what I would use it for.

I got an M4 not too long ago. Love it to death. As a shotgun goes, I don't think you will be disappointed if you buy one.

As for ammo finicky-ness, I accidentally purchased some < 1 oz birdshot and of the 50 rounds I ran through it, it only jammed once (nice stovepipe, easy to clear). So yeah, it can be finicky, but cheap Wally World 1 1/8 oz birdshot it eats all day and asks for more of.

As for clay shooting, it is more difficult than with other guns as basically no part of the gun is designed to do clay shooting (except the removable choke setup). It took a bit of practice to get even respectable with the M4 at trap. Haven't tried skeet or sporting clays with it yet.

The best part about clay shooting with the M4 is it shoots light. I can't really feel the recoil on mine when trap shooting, however this is partly because of the biggest problem with the M4 re:clay shooting, namely that the thing is heavy. This wears out your arms fast. Tired arms are not so conducive to the whole "accuracy" thing.

              Get a longer barrel... 26" or 28" around $700.

For the M4? I thought the only options were 2 port 18.5" and 4 port 18.5"...

I've never heard of a longer barrel for the M4. I have seen SB M4s, but never a longer one.

If you want a Benelli for trap shoots..try a M1, M2, Nova etc. Most will have barrels of 24-28" inches with 3-5 chokes. What you are looking for is basically a hunting shot gun. Skeet=bird, duck etc.
Winchester, browning & remington have models to fit your needs.

M4 for clays?! Id say no. It's a combat shotgun first.

But even if you buy longer barrels, they're not know as the best blanced guns out there for fast sporting shooting. That's why you see many O/U's and Beretta 391's.

Additionally, for clay target shooting, you'll use a lot of light loads. The M4 is ammo picky.

Some will fire light, some won't.

But for a pure combat gun firing heavy loads, it excells. It's overbuilt and does its job well.

                        thanks...

                        thanks for the replies all.

with the sale at Turners, the M4 after tax and dros is $1734.81.

i haven't spent that much on any firearm *yet*.

i held the M2 and M4 at Turners in Norwalk recently. both feel really good.

will dream about both. i would like to pull the trigger on one of these though.
