    760 wingmaster barrel

I have 2 rem 870 wingmaster shotguns. Bothe are 2.75" 12ga. Sorry for the mistake in the title. I do not know how to fix it.
They are older firearms (one is from the 1960's) and the barrels will not work with steel shot.
Can I buy a barrel that will fit without any gunsmith work that will handle steel shot.
I have not been around shotguns for years. I have extensive knowledge of pistols and rifles.
    Thank you for any information.

The old barrels, assuming they are in good shape, will work with steel shot, as long as the loads and chokes are appropriate. if your current chokes are CYL, Skeet, IC, or Light Mod/Mod, you can use just about any 2-3/4" steel load with shot size up to #2 (maybe #1). Appropriate shot size depends on actual choke constrictions.

Any later Remington (the OLD Remington) 870 barrel should fit your gun. A 3" chamber barrel should fit, but DO NOT use 3" shells on a 2-3/4" receiver. All of the later barrels will have some form of Rem Chokes, and that is the way to go if you buy a replacement barrel. Your guns probably did not come with the Light Contour barrels, but I think those will work if a gap around the forend does not bother you too much. The 870 Express and Sportsman's barrels should fit, but the finish will not matchthe rest ofthe gun. You can check with Remington for details and advice, and to check whether the current production barrels will fit your gun. They should work, but the new company may have made some changes.

There are lots of 870 barrels on eBay, GunBroker, etc. You can also try places like Corson's Barrels.

If you have a full or modified choked 870 barrel you can have a qualified gunsmith hone out the choke section to imp cylinder..
$60when I did mine years ago ,, not sure cost now..
Then just swap barrels between your two 870s depending on need..
      Cheers ?
Ps.. Have your barrel stamped with the new choke designation..

If your barrels have screw-in Rem-Choke choke tubes, you can get Remington and other brands of choke tubes that are steel rated.
You won't need to get new barrels.
Generally, you will use a one size larger choke size for shooting steel shot that you would use for lead shot.
(A steel rated full choke might be larger than a lead full choke.)
Generally, you will use one size larger, sometimes two, for the steel shot itself versus lead shot size.

          ><

Over the years I have not found an 870 barrel that did not just drop in (same gauge of course) 60's 870 all the way to 2015....all go plunk

          swap all you want.

Millions of steel rounds have been shot through pre 80's Rem barrels. Just stay away from full choke. The worst than can happen a rib come loose. More issues with soldered doubles, but even most of those survived. A given choke will pattern tighter with steel than lead.

That said, when steel shot came out the go-to was a new 3" barrel (Rem, Hastings/Mossberg, etc, while avoiding 3" shells on non-magnum receivers.

                From Remington's website:

                Question
Can I use steel shot in my shotgun barrel?

                Answer
We do not recommend the use of steel shot through any barrel manufactured before 1963 or through any barrel having a fixed Full choke. If you have barrels, manufactured after 1963, with fixed Modified or Improved Cylinder chokes, you may shoot up to size #2 steel shot. The use of steel shot larger than size #2 is only recommended in modern barrels with the Rem Choke system.

If you have the Rem Choke system, you may shoot any size steel through the Improved Cylinder and Modified choke tubes. The Full choke tube must state "For Steel or Lead" to be capable of handling steel shot.
