Mossberg 590 set-up for duck hunting

I am new to hunting. I?ve been out duck hunting one season and wanted to do other small game hunting and turkey hunting eventually. I wanted to get a new Mossberg shotgun.

I was thinking that I would get a Mossberg 590 and get a longer barrel with removable chokes (maybe 26, 28 or 30 inches). I wanted to get a 590 instead of a 500 because I like the Magpul furniture and I thought it would be nice to get the upgrade like the metal trigger guard and metal safety. More importantly, I also wanted a drilled and tapped receiver so it will be easier to upgrade with a red dot or sights for turkey hunting in the future.

Is it reasonable/possible for me to get a 590 and just switch out the barrel to be better for duck and small game hunting? Or would it be better to get a 500 and upgrade for the features I want?

So basically there are 2 complications with the 590:

    1) finding a barrel. I?m not sure that mossberg makes a long barrel for the 590.

    And

    2) plugging the magazine so it only holds 2 rounds. This isn?t that hard, but an important one to remember. Lots of different ways to make a plug, everyone has opinions on which is best.

    Or

You can buy a 500 that is drilled and tapped and just swap furniture, but the magazine extension is a bit more annoying if you want more than 6 rounds.

590 may be a bit heavier over 500, but 590 and 500 share the small things. I believe today their is only up to 28 and call acc choke. Some barrel from 30 and down are fix, which mean you can't put any choke unless you have a Smith thread the barrel. Those barrel are not to great for hunting in California since it's lead free, I don't want to get into with etc. But enjoy 😉

FWIW i remembered that some folk have had success with using the barrels from the 835 provided that your 590 has the shorter) mag tube, although you could in theory make a spacer like someone did on cg years ago with an 870 security/hd with a long tube? There are a couple threads elsewhere if you do some digging

        Found it

If you go with an 8+1 gun, be prepared to cut a long piece of dowel to get down to 2+1

I hunt ducks and brant with a Mossberg 500 with 20"barrel and 590 mag tube. Works great.

i would look into the Mossberg field/security combo. theres a few different versions. they come with a 28? barrel for hunting and a 18.5? barrel for home defense. Some mossbergs come with the receiver already drilled and tapped from the factory. Not sure if all versions come with the barrels already threaded for chokes.
