I'd like to install a Dave's metal works extension onto my Remington 11-87. Is this as simple as twisting the new extension into place and replacing the spring? Do the extensions need to be supported by the barrel? Is there any machining that needs to be done?

Dave's stuff is great. It just screws on. You should support him - he's a So Cal vendor - they're aren't many of them left. -
Dave's Metal Works is the place to see if you have an 11-87 or a Benelli M4. Dave is a great gunsmith and he is really expanding his offerings. As for the 11-87 you won't have any problems with the extension. If you do, give him a call and he will make it work.
I highly recommend his replacement bolt release/ easy loader that replaces the small button on the bottom of the shell carrier. It is a gunsmith install only so you will have to take your shotgun in or send it to him but it is worth it. He makes a tactical length and a competition length but it completely changes how the shotgun operates. It should seriously be a factory item that Remington includes on all of their 11-87's. If you don't have one forget the extension and get that instead. Cuts your reload times drastically by replacing the button with a metal ramp that is the complete size of the shell carrier. No more fishing around for the small black factory button with the nose of your shell.
He's Socal friendly , and he is a major supporter of the shooting sports in general. We need to support people like him.Comment

I had trouble with my extension (but i don't remember what brand it is) my factory tube had the indents formed in it near the top to keep the plug from flying out. These had to be drilled out and smoothed over on the side to let the shells go past the end and into the extension.Frank

Does the replacement shell carrier hang below the frame or sit flush with the receiver? Whereabouts in california is Dave located?

Dave is in Covina. If your shotgun had dimples in it he can take them out for you or you can do it yourself. I don't think he dremels or drills them out.
I know the long EZ loader hangs below the receiver I'm not sure about the short one.I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.
When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.Comment

What is getting filed here? The easyloader, the stock carrier, or the receiver?Originally posted by slamfireThe stock carrier remains on the gun but you do have to file a bit to make things function. All the parts in the trigger group are replaceable so it can be restored to stock. You can if you want to buy a complete trigger group and switch them back and forth without much effort just remove two pins.Comment
