Can a magazine tube extension be added to this Mossberg 500?

I have a Mossberg 500 with a breacher barrel. Basically the Crusader except it came with an actual stock from the factory and not the pistol grip. I of course, being me changed everything to Magpul furniture.

I am thinking about adding Choate's One Shot Extension Tube for the Mossberg Crusader. Except when I remove the endcap, I see this plastic insert holding in the spring. I don't want to mess with it for fear of breaking my shotgun without consulting the Mossberg experts here first. Does it unscrew? Is there a Youtube video on how to do this properly? Can it even be done? Do I need a gunsmith?

if your mossberg is actually a 590/590a1 then ya the extension should work. the 500 has a different end on the mag tube. does your barrel have a ring on the bottom that slides onto/over the end of the mag tube?

I can’t answer your question but I do know it’s not possible to extend the tube on my 500. I have a standard 500 bought about 7 to 10 years ago.

This model is not like most 500s. I added more pics to help make this more clear. The endcap does not have a bolt that screws in. It has a threaded tube (threads on the outside) and the entire endcap rotates as it screws onto it. You should be able to see the difference in the picture above. In that respect it works like a 590. As all the crusaders (and this model which I cannot remember the name of) did. I think maybe they called this the "barricade"?

I think the plastic peice pops right out with a flat head screwdriver. But I did not want to try it without confirming it.

ya it should work. that choate mag extension should replace the oem mag cap. that cap within the mag tube retains the spring. when i replaced the oem mag cap on my 590a1 i removed the cap from the mag tube the extension is what holds the spring in.

Try removing the plug but go easy so you don’t break anything.

Should work fine, you just have to pry out that stock spring retainer and throw it away.

Hang onto the retainer so you can go back to original if you want to.
