AK shotgun

Has someone come up with a way to make AK shotguns California legal beside featureless? Asking for a friend. I would have kept up since maglocks became illegal if it was mine.

CA assault weapons laws for shotguns are similar to but different than the assault weapons laws for rifles.
^What may be CA legal for rifles, can be CA illegal for shotguns.

In order to be considered a CA legal featureless semi-auto shotgun:
1. It must have a fixed magazine.
2. It can not have a folding/telescoping stock and a pistol grip or any type of vertical grip or a thumbhole stock.

In order to be considered a CA legal fixed magazine, the ammunition feeding device needs to be contained in the firearm in such a manner that it can not be removed without disassembling the firearm's action or it is permanently attached in the firearm's magazine well.

Only manually operated (bolt-action, lever-action, pump-action) shotguns can legally operate with detachable magazines.

A fin grip does nothing to make a semi-auto shotgun with a non-fixed magazine CA legal.
^If a semi-auto shotgun has a fin grip and accepts detachable magazines, then it is still considered an illegal assault weapon. [PC 30515(a)(7)]


Currently...
1. There is no commercially available part/device that makes an AK style shotgun have a CA legal fixed magazine.
2. The only widely known method to make a CA legal fixed magazine for an AK style shotgun is to permanently attach (weld/rivet) a magazine into the magazine well.

The lack of CA legal fixed magazine solution is the reason why the common method of making an AK style shotgun CA legal is by plugging the gas port/removing the gas-piston, which makes it into a straight pull bolt-action shotgun.

A magazine can always be welded and load through the ejection port but that would be a highly impractical way to shoot and own one. Magazine fed semi auto shotguns are basically a no go in this state. I have never seen any kind of maglock product for AK shotguns.

I'd suggest the Tavor TS-12 instead or a KSG or M&P 12 if you want a tactical multi shot shotgun that holds a lot of shells or a Beretta 1301 Tactical if 7 shells max will do you

I have a VEPR 12 Shotgun with the puck to make it essentially bolt action disabling the gas system. It makes me miss the bullet button days. I'd second getting an IWI TS12 I have one and I love it. I also have an RIA VR80 and its not so bad with the mag lock. I don't think it's worth getting an AK Shotgun in CA anymore.

Totally agree, they have burdened AK shotguns here so much that it's just not worth it. I ended up going with a 1301 Tactical, great shotgun and an M&P 12 to satisfy the short OAL/bullpup wants, but the TS-12 looks great too.

How does it do with mixed types of loads, is it picky? I've heard lots of conflicting things from TS-12 owners, some say it digests everything they throw at it, others say it only feeds one brand reliably?

Hey Capybara, I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. I've fired a bunch of different brands of slugs and some 00 Buck with no issues at all. The TS12 is probably my favorite gun to shoot right now.

Tavor TS-12 and call it a day.

I think it needs to be at least 1200 fps and if you cycle about 50-100 shells through it becomes less finicky.

I had jams in the initial break in period with some Rio crap but Winchester was better.

Any TS-12 users have a recommended cheap shells for practice?

I ended up buying the M&P 12 instead of the TS-12 but the TS-12 will be added to my safe at some point, it's such a nice shotgun!

The ranges I go to mostly only allow slugs, I haven't used birdshot. Congrats on the M&P12, those are nice as well.

Very underrated shotgun. Everyone just thinks it's a ripoff of the KSG and perhaps it is conceptually? But shoot the KSG and then shoot the M&P 12, they feel and shoot pretty differently. I think the Smith is more robust and reliable than the KelTec but that's just my opinion.
