Long Term Storage of an 870

Im considering getting an 870 marine magnum for long term storage (SHTF stash). Any suggestions on what type of case or airtight system to store the 870? I was thinking about getting 6" drainage pipe and gluing on caps after filling the cylinder with nitrogen.

It will be buried at the "vacation" home.

    Your thoughts or suggestions?

Uhh.... throw it in a muddy puddle and come back when you need it. You're talking severe overkill. These things can sit on shelves for years as is...

are you planning on burying it or just hidden away somewhere dry ?

a lot depends on where you are putting it

Instead of trying to get the nitrogen purge, take a look into these:

They are VCI bags (Vapor Corrosion Inhibiting). The emit a vapor that settles on the surface of metals and prevents corrosion. Machine tool and equipment companies have been using them for a long time for long-term storage/shipping of their goods.

If you have a sealing machine (like the "Foodsaver" vacuum sealers they sell at Costco), you can make a nice sealed package to put into your drainage tube for long term storage. It would be totally air/water tight and have the corrosion inhibitor built in. This is the route I would go.....

This guy buried his rifle for 15 years and it looks like it came out OK.

If you are going to put it into an airtight tube, an oxygen absorber is mandatory. The gun WILL get moldy if you do not put in an oxygen absorber.

Most of the silica gel dessicants you can buy now have a built-in fungicide and would be fine for this purpose.

There is a cat litter available made from pure silica gel that is a good source for bulk and low cost. It's not a great cat litter but it turns blue when it's "full," which is handy.

Put a thin coat of CLP on everything, 1 lb. of silica gel and gun and ammo will be ready to rip at the drop of a hat for years, no cleaning of cosmoline.

This post total reminds me of Terminator 2 where they uncover the mega weapon stash in the desert, haha.
