The odds of ever needing a firearm in a home defense situation is very low. That being said if a shotgun would make you feel more confident in being able to handle that rare situation should arise, a new mossberg 88 is very inexpensive. Ammo to become proficient in its use would be more than the cost of the shotgun itself.

A shotgun is a noteworthy fight stopper. It’s odds of stopping a threat are cited as better than the odds from a single shot out of a handgun. Of course, shot placement is important. But a shotgun is a great home defense tool.

A load of shot will expand about 1 inch for every three feet from the muzzle. You definitely need to aim a shotgun.

So, yes. You need a shotgun.

Are you proficient with shotguns? Do you have kids in the home? Do you live in a multi-family dwelling? Maybe take a home defense class at CRPA and decide after the class.

Each year, CRPA educates thousands of Californians on what it takes to be a safe,...

          Buy one

Yup, a shotgun is one of the best you can have for home defense. Get a pump, its simple to use and relatively affordable. For your anticipated in-home use, get one with an 18 inch barrel. Its less cumbersome and more dynamic to swing around, just in case.

Keep in mind that the 00Buck 12 gauge shotgun shell has pellets that are all the size of 9 mm bullets. These are being fired from a rifle barrel with more velocity. I have four protection shotguns. Two I trust more than other ones. I really wouldn?t use anything else in the home if I ever had to. I think just the sound of a racking one into the chamber is enough to scare most intruders. Probably just looking for things to steal in order to buy drugs. That?s enough to scare them away and end the threat before you ever see them.

I remember when Joe Biden about 10 years ago said GET A SHOTGUN?

                  HAHAHAHA
                  WELL I DID
                  HERES THE STORY

Biden, who is leading a push for President Barack Obama's gun control proposals, made the remark during a question-and-answer session on Facebook on Tuesday.

The vice-president has not one but two shotguns, which he says he keeps in a locked cabinet at his house in his home state of Delaware, and he has given his wife, Jill, explicit instructions on how to deal with any would-be intruder.

"We live in an area that's wooded and secluded," Biden said. "I said, 'Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here ... put that double-barrelled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house.'

"I promise you, whoever's coming in is not going to," Biden said. "You don't need an AR-15 [assault rifle]. It's harder to aim. It's harder to use. And in fact, you don't need 30 rounds to protect yourself.

"Buy a shotgun. Buy a shotgun," he said.

The vice-president, who is known for sometimes telling long, personal stories in his public appearances, is pushing Obama's plan for curbing gun violence after the December school shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

But some of the proposals, including a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, have run into stiff opposition from the influential US gun lobby and its advocates on Capitol Hill.

Biden has expressed a predilection for shotguns before. In January, during a similar chat session on Google+, he said that in a catastrophic scenario such as an earthquake, which could lead to mass disturbances, "if you want to keep people alive ... buy some shotgun shells".
