    1100 operation

It's been a long time since I shot my dear departed 1100. Since then I bought a POS used one at a gun show, and I can't remember how it works. When the last shell is fired, the bolt locks back. How do you release it? Just pull it back a hair and let it go like an AR? The only thing I can get my bolt to drop with is pushing the chrome button on the lifter.

Is that how an 1100 is supposed to work? Or is it broken and I need to take it to a gunsmith?

You got it right, the button on the lifter.
You can also add a Dave's Metal Works Easyloader, it replaces the button. I have it on both of my 1100's.

I was going to get one of those a long time ago, but I saw lots of complaints about how hard it was to install.

I had Dave install them for me a long time ago. We shot together at Southwest Pistol League

Here's thread from AR15.com about installing the Easyloader, unfortunately the picture links are dead. It was pretty clear when there were pics.

The Easyloader from Dave's Metal Works (DMW) is probably the single most installed modification on the Remington 1100 for 3-gun shooters today. Ironically, with as many people installing the Easyloade

I installed one of the EasyLoaders on my 1100... it's only tricky in that you must tap the roll pins to exact center (these are perpendicular to the bore axis), do a little fine detail filing, you know, what good gunsmiths are better at than we are...

It worked, but I never competed with it nor schooled with it... just shot it, acquiring some practical experience with it because I had dressed the gun for Texas Tactical home defense with a Remington 18.5" bead sight, Parkerized 1100 barrel, a Wilson Combat one-shot mag extension and a Brownell's combat bolt handle.

I later removed the Dave's Easy Loader in favor of a Remington competition carrier... the little chrome button on the carrier is blued, but longer, allowing for easier loading of shotshells.
