590A1 Cleaning

Picked up a 590A1 last night, which is the first gauge I have owned. Was tearing down to clean last night and pondered the question of should I clean & oil the magazine tube. No mention of treatment for the magazine in the manual -so I patched thu some Hoppes and called it good.

SO that's the question before you - do you routinely apply oil to the magazine tube as you would the barrel or run it dry to avoid picking up dirt and debris???

Dry is better, IMHO. You don't have a lot of moving parts in there, and the risk of failure from dirt/sand/grit is greater then that of wear. Keep it clean(use Hoppes #9 or similar) and use a very light coat of lube. You could also sub in a dry film lube(Remington DriLube).

I run my dry.
Clean it once in a while and run it dry.

the bracket that has the bayonet lug and the magazine cap are rust magnets, so keep a good eye on them though. in the corps we used to soak the cap in clp because of that.

what are you talking about? mossberg m590a1, remove the magazine cap and soak in a cup of clp. i was in from 91-97. never said i used a 1911, carried the m9 sometimes.

I also run the tube dry, put put a thin film of oil on the spring to keep it from rusting. I actually had minor issues with the stock follower hanging up somewhere in the tube (it's a cheesy stamped steel bottlecap). Switched to a Delrin follower and the gun runs 100% now, plus you don't hear that "screeeeech" when loading the tube.
