Good all-around shotgun for under $500

    Ok guys.....

I have a friend looking for an all-around shotgun. Here's the parameters - any suggestions?

    - wants to use on occasion for skeet/trap/clay
    - wants to use on occasion for close range three-gun
    - wants to use as primary home defense weapon
    - does not want to spend more than $500 bucks (new or used)

    Suggestions?
    Over/Under?
    Pump?
    Semi-auto?
    Brands?
    Barrel length?

    Thanks!

Big 5 Mossberg combo might do the trick, comes with 2 barrels. A long barrel for hunting/skeet and a short one for home defense. Plus its only like half of your budget, so plenty left over for ammo.

        sounds good to me.

alternative might be Rem 870, but its not as good a deal as the mossberg

Because my beloved 982 doesnt really meet that requirement due to its 18" barrel, then these shotguns in this order. You'll most likely need to have another barrel if you want to go skeet/trap/clay shooting and then have it as a HD gun. A Mossberg 500 Combo will suit your needs but with $500 you can buy a 982 for HD and a M500 for your other needs (which is basically my setup).

          Remington 870
          Mossberg 500
          Winchester 1300
          Ithaca M37

If you are not hunting goose with it you will not need the 3.5" shell capability.
Mossy 500 uses 2 3/4 and 3 inch just fine.
I've even run some 2 1/2 inch english rounds through mine with no problems.

Benelli Supernova. With or without pistol grip. Just try and get the ghost ring sights. Awesome shotgun!

I got one of those Russian Remington OU I also have a 500a, the Remington will do it all except primary home defense, then again, shooting skeet with a pump is kind of funny

For not much more money you can get two Remington 870's a ghetto blaster to fend off the Zombies, and a 28" barrel for hunting and clay games. Buy one then wait and look for barrels or wait a little longer and buy another Remmy.

If you buy both of them at the same time you only have to pay one dros and save yourself 25 bucks.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.

Good choice on the Mossberg 500 combo. It was my first personal shotgun I purchased. With the extra money he saved, he can buy ammo to shot that thing

Get a good used 870 with choke tubes. You need open chokes for skeet, tight ones for trap and different ones depending on what kind of hunting you are doing. The Mosburg will not hold it's value like the Remington (they never have). I am sure that you can find one under 300.00 with a concerted search.
