    Shotgun fit

    Greetings Calgunners,

As usual, I am doing things backwards. Picked up a CZ ring neck sxs and it does not fit. When I throw it up to my shoulder, my eye is so far above the sight line, it is ridiculous.

Selling it is an option, I guess. But would it be feasible to have it fitted? My last shotgun was a 1950s Winchester Model 12. That one lined up like a dream. First round with it on trap I got 23/25. It was only my 3rd round shooting trap. My neighbor had taken me out to the Sacramento Trap Shooting Club (before Mel Rapton Honda was awarded the property) and let me try a couple of his shotguns - an O/U and Remington pump. I did better with the pump. Could not hit squat with the O/U. All 12 gauge, btw.

I have always wanted a SxS. Not even sure if I can shoot it accurately. Never shot one before and my neighbor advised against one saying they are a challenge to shoot well.

    I would appreciate your recommendations.

Send me a pm if you’d like to meet at sac valley or Wilton (Alta Mesa Gun Club). There are a bunch of old timers that would love to help you. I could probably use some help too, lol.

Correct length of pull, eye dominance and mount are important first steps. It sounds like you need more length of pull. Being a taller guy, I usually add spacers and put on a thicker recoil pad. Check out these products to help with proper shotgun fit and recoil.

Recoil causes shooting fatigue. Shoot with more endurance, accuracy and less flinching. Select FalconStrike Multi-Fit Recoil Pad for Synthetic Stocks.

Sacramento Valley Shooting Center is 860+ acres and 13 ranges in Sloughhouse, CA. Public pistol, rifle, and trap shooting plus 30+ affiliated clubs.

    Good luck!

      Brownells is great!

Sent Dave a pm. I typically mount the shotgun and then slide it forward until my eye is lined up and looking down the barrel. Then I have someone measure the distance from my shoulder pocket to the end of the buttstock. Usually, a limbsaver recoil pad and spacer is all I need.

      If you need a spacer:

Have you patterned it? The stock fitter?s bible is a great read, very helpful. ultimately it?s not about how we think it should fit, it?s how the fit impacts our poi, so the only way to test it is to get out and shoot it and see how far off it is.

Shooting a side by side is different; the guns tend to swing faster in my experience. This can make breaking clays more challenging, but it can be very useful in hunting situations where a faster swing can mean getting on target while the bird is in shooting range. I find it fun, although I have different fitment issues with my side by side I still need to get resolved.

You should really get someone experienced to take a look at your mount and fit. Until you have a consistent mount, the fit really cant be perfectly evaluated, of course some things may be obvious.
Old sxs shotguns often had a lot of drop, making them tough to keep your head on.
          Newer guns have gotten better
