    threading barrel for chokes

hey Calguns, I've got a quick question for the shotgun experts here, which i can assure that I'm not. Ive got a Stevens 320, which is just a cheap copy of a Winchester 1300, with a 28" vent rib barrel that i want to have cut down to around 20" and threaded for chokes. I contacted a gun smith who told me that because of the vent rib barrel it wouldn't be possible to have the barrel threaded which struck me as odd as I've seen it done on videos i found while doing research. Do any of you have any input on this? seems like as long as the wall thickness is sufficient it should be possible. Im in the east bay area in NorCal if anyone has local gunsmith suggestions.

Also before anyone says anything, yes I'm aware it would be much easier to buy a new shotgun with the features I'm looking for, I just have a little sentimental attachment to the gun and also don't really want to do another transfer, if its not easy enough ill just leave it as is. Thanks in advance!

https://eatingthewild.com/poly-choke/ Just did a quick search and I remember seeing these on some shotguns in the field when I was younger. Some shunned them for the aesthetics, but I think they are handier than have a wallet of tubes and wrench. Especially for a working shotgun.

Unless you will never hunt nor shoot clays, would you consider buying a spare 20" that already has chokes?

Many used barrels are under $200. Might be cheaper than a chop and thread job.

The only mitigating factor is the Wall Thickness of the barrel.

My Browning A5 barrel that I had already cut down couldn't be threaded because the wall Thickness was to thin to accommodate the threads.

However all my Mossberg Barrels have been fine. I would think yours would too as most inexpensive shotguns have fatter barrels. The Vent Rib has nothing to do with i,t as long as you cut the barrel just in front of one of the standoffs for the rib.

Obviously you wouldn't cut it in the middle of an open section.

Here's the front of the barrel on the Monkeyberg. You can see that I cut the rib off just in front of the standoff. That Choke tube is an IC, but I run a Rifled Choke Tube most of the time.

Bob Day could tell you for sure.
