    Safety for 870

Which one is the preffered safety button for an 870, Scattergun Jumbo Head Safety or the Vang Comp Big Speed Safety? Is it more personal preferrence? Are there any issues that I might run into when installing either?

I had a VC on my old 870, and I just installed another one on my friend's new 870. Good stuff.

Just make sure the little ball detent spring doesn't go flying away (or into your eye) when you back out the pin. Other than that, easy-peasy.

I prefer the Wilson Combat as I have about five of the Vang Comps that I can not even get in the tigger housing. Also, If you ever install a SpecOps the Vang Comp will not work so having the Wilson there puts you ahead of the game. You can go to www.aiptactical.com and under "Customer Service" you will find a red link "How to Video" and you will find a video on how to change the safety out on an 870

Do these aftermarket safeties increase the chance of inadvertently bumping the safety off? Just curious.

I mean, I haven't had any trouble pushing my standard safeties, not to say others may have a problem, which is ok if they do and the aftermarket safeties work for them.

OTOH, if I had one of those Remington safeties with the key lock, I'd want to get rid of it with something else for sure.

The detent prevents you from inadvertently pushing the safety off. You'd have to hit it pretty good to bump it off.

I've had both and prefer the VC. It's larger and easier to feel with and w/o gloves. Never inadvertently operated it.

You can install a standard 870 and remove the j-lock safety, it will work but the j-lock has a plunger instead of a detent ball and the spring is shorter. If you want it to work best then install a standard safety, Wilson Over size or Van Comp but get a new detent ball and spring.......

thanks for the compliment of the web site but it is home made. I priced professional web sites and hosting and decided to do it my way and keep the prices of my weapons down closer to earth. The other guys charge hundreds more for their builds and a lot of that is due to their business cost like web sites, advertising and the other stuff they hire out that I do myself....

The point of the oversize safety is that you don't have to take your finger off the trigger to disengage the safety. Hence the name speed safety. It would be excellent on a hunting 870 also.

I haven't tried the Wilson but like the Vang Comp safety, it's fast and comfortable.

Check your local gun store, I paid $12 for my Vang Big Head safety at my local gun store.

BTW, the Vang safety is great, the only thing I haven't decided yet is whether to paint the portion that indicates the safety is off in red.
