Where to Get Low Recoil Slugs?

    Hello!

Picking up a 1301 soon, the local range (San Leandro) only allows slugs in their outdoor area. I figure I should just get low recoil slugs as I figure the less punishing they are, the more I will want to shoot it.

Just wondering where you guys are finding them for a decent price? So far the best I have found is $48 for 50 rounds of Federal Premium Tactical LE slugs. But then of course shipping and ammo FFL transfer fees eat the savings a bit lol.

Your choice of ammo shows you may have Read my "What I did to my Shotguns" Thread above.?

There is no need for Slugs or Buckshot ammo over 1300 fps unless you are shooting Polar Bears! No steel or Paper Target is ever going to know the difference. but your shoulder will and the attention you have on the gun beating the snot out of you will definitely affect your shooting.

You can't learn how to operate a gun when you are thinking about other things. You need all your concentration on running the gun and aiming it.

People who think that you must to run what you are going to shoot in Combat to get used to it are fools. Especially when you don't even need 3" magnums for combat! Nobody is going to live thru a hit by a 1 oz. slug at 1300 fps even out to 50 yards. It id like being hit by a Truck!

I ran into our Coast Guard at my range once. they were doing Shotgun Quali.

They were shooting 3" magnums in Mossberg 590A1's. I saw some pretty small women trying to shoot these gun and nobody wanted to pull the trigger, because they knew they were going to get the snot knocked out of them.

They didn't know how to shoot the guns and mitigate that recoil because all their training had been conducted with full power ammo.

I gave them a box of my 12 ga Reloads and they couldn't believe the difference. I talked to the instructor adn he told me that the Navy would only Stock 3" Magnums?

I told him they were stoopid, and needed a Course Correction!

You can't train when you are afraid of the gun. Period!

It’s been a long while but I thought I had picked some up at a Sportsman’s Warehouse. For my needs, I like the low-recoil slugs.

I've had good luck with Fiocchi's low recoil slugs.

My 1301 loves Fiocci low recoil slugs. I know Ammo Supply Warehouse in Pahrump, NV usually has them and I have ordered from them a few times and had them shipped to an FFL. Bereli in Florida is also a good place to order from and they usually offer free shipping.

Here's an Idea,,, Maybe you should look at Reloading? I load all my Shot Shells with Shot, Buckshot and Slugs. Been doing it for years.

Shot Shells are not that hard to do, and at a bare minimum you can do it with a piece of wood dowel, a nail, and a Roll Crimp Tool.

It doesn't cost that much to get started and you will like doing it as well as the new Low Cost of your Ammo.

I can load Premium 12 ga. shells for <.22 cents per Round. That is half what the Cheapest Shotgun Shells cost.

Here's a pic of Slugs I shoot most often and I cast them myself.

Here's some Store Bought Slugs you can get from BPI

Natchez has RIO slugs at good price,I forget if they're low velocity. Available 12G 1 1/8OZ 1200FPS $189.50 per 250rds. I used a bunch of these 10 yrs ago and worked well enough.

Careful with RIO. A lot of their stuff is loaded longer than 2 3/4", so you get less rounds in the tube. I can't remember if that's the case with their slugs, but it's the case with their buck.

1200fps is a pretty mild for a slug

Ive found so many variances with different mfgs loads.

I did load up soke of my own 2-1/2" shells which are 2" and feed in all my guns and even cycle in my versamax.
                          1000fps 12 pellet #1 buck load. If I remember right I get like 10 or 12 in a 7rd tube.

Those 1-7/8 shells are just too small and weak.
To easy to fumble around with and are not reliable in all my guns. And they are expensive
