Please help me with 12g ammo

Aside from ammo also get a couple different barrels. For example my first shotgun (almost 50 years ago) is still in service and has rifled barrel, 18", 24" and 30" barrels - the ability to have a flexible platform is great (still looking for a 34" barrel).

In an HD session I'll trade max velocity for quicker and more reliable follow-up shots, so it's 2 3/4 Federal Flight Control for me.

The shot size is a fuzzier topic. I chose '00 but anything close is fine. With the Flight Control I get a *far* tighter pattern so the number of projectiles is of lesser importance. Wall penetration is important to me, so any youtube studies would be appreciated.

IMO there is no one size fits most when it comes to choosing what "HD" load to use.

Most people live in apartments or track homes except in the older parts of town where the homes are older/better built.

City dwellers have to contend with short distances and interiors that will not play well with heavy loads. Hollow core doors and cheaply built to code interior/exterior walls will not stop heavy loads. Thru n thru 12 or 20 will do harm to the unintended. Be sure of your target and what's beyond.

If you live in a brick walled home then a heavy load may be OK. Log cabin w/heavy wooden walls may be OK.

1 oz of #8 will go thru an interior wall and has a greater chance of not going thru a second. It also has a greater chance of not going thru a meat/bone/cloth target. It also has a tough time going thru a solid core door. I've seen these results first hand.

Heavy loads are good but not always the best medicine to repel boarders. Think it thru and decide what's best for your home. There's no room for dogmatic group think IMO.

Sooner or later....

After it gets dark, try walking around your house w/your unloaded shotgun in your bare feet(unless UR gonna take the time to put shoes on during a break in) w/the lights out.


I don't care how used U are to walking around your place in the dark w/o a long gun, doing it w/a long gun is different.


Keep doing it until U can do it w/o running your barrel into things, and stubbing your feet on stuff.

1st time I tried this many yrs. ago I broke my little toe taking a step where it snagged on the corner of a chair. Believe me that taught me a lesson.

To keep things simple short of going to a shotgun class (which you need to do), 2 3/4" #00 buckshot, either that has 8 or 9 pellet. The barrel on your shotgun is going to like a particular load and that is part of the voodoo of shotguns.

You need to "pattern" your shotgun. Buy a variety of buckshot rounds that you're able to get ahold of and see what your shotgun does with them.

You're looking for a concentric and dense pattern that would hit the center of a B8 Target at the distance you need it to. https://targets4free.com/nra-b8-target/

Flight control is a terrific round, but know it can make for exceptionally tight groupings.

Other than that, get a weapon light and a means to carry ammunition on the gun. Shotgun cards work great.
