Remington 11-48

Not sure if this belongs in here or C&R, but I have recently been given my grandmothers 11-48 in 20 gauge. I don't hunt, and have used a 1100 in 12 g for trap. Trying to figure out what I should do with it. Would it work for trap? Home defense? What do you recommend?

It would work for either, trap or HD. Most loads available for 12 are close in 20 although you may find it tough to find some 00buck in 20, it is available.

I would caution you though, since it is a fairly old shotgun, it needs a lot of lubrication, especially with that particular model.

It would go good with my 11-48 16 ga.
Or else, use it for clays shooting!
Mine shoots as reliably well as any "modern" shotgun.
Don't overlube the recoil spring and the magazine tube it rides on.
Just a little bit is all that is needed.
I can scan the manual if Remington won't send it.

It sounds like this to me:

Well, that's with the 16... The 20 is a lighter recoil, I'm sure.

That would be great to get a copy of the manual. I have never cleaned or worked on a shotgun, so no idea what to do.

I just got through cleaning my father in laws 11-48 in 12ga. He bought it new and never took it apart to clean it. I didn't have a manual for it, nor have I ever taken apart a semi auto shot gun. It wasn't that hard to do.

11-48s are good shootin guns. I wouldn't get rid of the one you have, you may find it handy one day.

Thanks Otteray! The manual will be useful. I've got a plain jane, well used, 12g and a much higher grade .410. The .410 is one of my favorite shotguns to play with. A 20g might be fun for hunting and clays.

I don't plan on selling it, just wanted to know more and see what I could do with it. I may try shooting clay with it. Only done it a few times with a borrowed 1100 in 12g, getting 29/50. Maybe with some more practice...

If I wanted to buy a few rounds for hd, what do you guys use?

If you live in an urban area, I recommend you pick up some buckshot. #00 or #1 would work well. If you live in a the country and there are no concerns of over penetration, I recommend up pick up some slugs.

I just remembered you had a 20ga. I'm not sure if they make buckshot sizes bigger than #2 for 20ga. But #2 or #3 buck would work as well.
