    OH NO!!!

My best friends nephew is 9.
His mom died last year and dad's a lifer in prison, so the kid is attached to his uncle and I at the hip. Now lives with grandpa.

Took the 9 year old out this weekend. He fell in LOVE with the 12ga. Prior to now i've said, "you dont want to shoot that" but he insisted, I figured he'd only ask once. LOL. His arm is beat up but he did good.

Grandpa says he's gonna buy him a single shot 20ga from big5 for his bday in august. I said "NOOOOOO!" The kid likes to rack the pump shotgun, just like us big kids sometimes do. And he'd have the same type of gun uncle and I have.

I think its time for an intervention, chippin' in the money and upgrading the kid to a 20ga 870 for his bday. I'm afraid the kid aint gonna want nothing to do with that single shot after an outing or two.

    Your thoughts?

Get him what he wants. If you don't, it might turn him off to the sport!

Buy lots of ammo. Instill safety. Shoot away.

I have a singgle shot 410 that was shot 3 times. Still its my sons first shotgun/rifle combo. So it stays. Get him the pump.

Look for a used "gas operated" shotgun if he likes 12 guage firepower. My Winchester model 50 kicks less than a .30 caliber M-1 carbine. Not even a kid is gonna land on his fanny after shooting one of those things...

Chip in and get him the pump he wants -- he's not going to be satisfied with the single-shot and then you'll end up having to get one anyways. The pumping and extra weight should be a good workout for a growing kid anyways, put some muscle on him early.

                      Go for the 870.

Good on you guys for stepping up and being a positive male role model in his life. We need more Uncles/Aunts, and their friends to step up for kids that come from backgrounds like this.

This boy is going to look back one day, appreciate and know, it was men like you who helped him become a better man.

Let him know the cost of the single shot and that of the pump.

Ask him which he want's, have him do some light 9 yo. chores around the house to make up some of the differance, you and the Uncle can do the bulk.

Makes the gun feel a little more special, having to work for and earn the upgrade. (even if it's just a small part of it).
                          Looking for a 3" Magnum 870 $200-$250ish

I totally agree with you....he is saving for one right now with the chores he has been doing. He just doesn't know it's going to be a birthday present.
