Berretta 1301 vs. Mossberg 940

I checked out the Mossbergs, then bought a 1301 Tactical. I don't think the Mossbergs are bad guns at all. But the general consensus is the 1301 Tactical cycles more reliably.NRA Certified Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor, Shotgun Instructor and Range Safety Officer

Mossberg looks nice. Never shot one, but I do own a 1301 and it's an incredible shotgun. Pop on an Aridus CROM and red dot along with the Beretta Pro lifter and you have a really nice set up.

Nothing at all wrong with the Mossberg it’s a good shotgun, but the 1301 is just about the perfect tactical shotgun. It’s right up there with the Benelli M4, many think it’s even better. If I was in the market for that type of shotgun, the Beretta is what I’d buy.
The one thing that may make a major difference is the location of the safety switch. If you are a long time Mossberg shotgunner and are use to the thumb method and not the crossbar, that would be a reason to go with the Mossberg and of course cost.Im a warmonger baby, I got blood in my eyes and I'm looking at you.Comment

Just got the 1301 Tactical last month. It is amazing! Smooth shooter and the cycling is quick!
Added a Mesa Tactical Urbino stock and it shoulders and shots great. Haven’t tried any high brass stuff yet but I’m sure it will be fine.
For what it is, it is amazingly light weight feeling."A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

My 1301 Tactical cycled impressively fast, right out of the box. It also ran flawlessly so far (fingers crossed.) It's relatively compact and lightweight.
I love it. To me, the only drawback is its ($$$) price.
(Just a random video from the video to demonstrate the fast cycling.)

This.Too heavy
Too expensive because military contract high price
Hard to customize same sights on the 1301 however.
Mine had a problem cycling some low brass
Beretta makes both and some parts are swap able
But I like the M 4.
Wouldn’t buy another after shooting the 1301.
That’s just my opinion.

The M4 is a dog compared to the 1301.
For what most of us are using the shotgun for the M4 is necessary, and like you mentioned is so much more finicky with what it likes and what it doesn't. The 1301 has cycled EVERYTHING I've put through it, including several different brands of low-recoil slugs, every type of bird shot I've fed it, and it even had no problem cycling a cheap brand called Black Aces that everyone else's gun in the class wouldn't cycle, including the pump guns. We had three 1301's in the class and they all ran like tops and everyone who got to shoot them didn't want to give them up.Last edited by Vinnie Boombatz; 07-26-2022, 10:56 PM.sigpicComment

Beretta all the wayComment

Hands down, Beretta 1301 is the better performing shotgun. Although the Beretta costs more, it’s lighter weight and much faster with better quality and craftsmanship. I owned a Mossberg 930 with all the Or3gun upgrades, which is basically what the 940 is. The only advantage, IMHO, of the Mossberg is less recoil due to being a heavier and slower cycling gun. Shooting a 1301 is like driving a Ferrari compared to the Mossberg being like driving a Cadillac.Comment

I also owned a Beretta 1301 and Remington 870 Police. I like both of them but if I will be given a choice of owning only one I will definitely pick the 1301 bar none. Pump shotgun is perfect as a tool, the problem is the operator. I realized and saw this in the shotgun class I have attended. After shouldering the heavy pump for a while both arms get tired and because you would like to shoot as fast as you can short stocking and what happens next is a jam. It does not happen in my 1301 simply because you cannot out fast the cycle so if using a good quality shell you minimized if not totally eradicate that problem.Comment
