Those machines produce a Roll Crimp. They work best with slugs that have a either a Flat Face or a flat edge with a bump in the middle Brenneke style.
They don't work very well with round nosed slugs or round balls because there isn't a place to the rolled in portion to seat against.
Those types of slugs are better off with a Fold Crimp. I've done both.
I just loaded 60 Lee 1 oz slugs for a 3 gun shoot tomorrow. All fold crimped.
You can also load buckshot with those machines and in that case you use an overshot card which gives the crimp a flat place to seat against. See in the pic above that shows the crimp in place on top of the edge of the slug
Hope this helps.

And Ballistic products has just about everything you will need to make good Slug Loads.
They also have a really nice book on loading slugs called "Slug Loading and Field Application." Well worth the money because it has a bunch of load data for many types of slugs and you can interpolate to the types of slugs you want to use.
The most common Home Made Slugs are the Lee Drive Key Slugs in 7/8 and 1 oz. And the Lyman 525 Slug which looks like a big Air Gun Pellet. I have loaded and shot hundreds of both of these. Also Round Balls are very easy to get good results from in Smoothbore Shotguns. While at BPI look into their Claybuster Slug Wads (the blue one in the center.) They work very well for all three of these Slugs.
