    shotgun range in San Diego

Are there any shotgun ranges in San Diego you guys recommend? I'm a member at Southbay rod & gun club, but I've been told twice already that i could not shoot trap there because there was no one certified to supervise the shotgun range that day.

I came across Escondido fish and game's website, anybody been there?

The Escondido facility is kind of the sister to the P2K range in El Cajon. They were both one time called San Diego Fish and Game Association, although I believe that they were connected otherwise as well, but since have severed that relationship. (Not really sure though.)
        I have never shot at the Escondido range but have shot at the following;
P2K has a single trap and a single 5 stand range along with an indoor rifle and pistol range.
If you plan on going there you will be required to take a test to assure that you are range worthy, not all of the questions will pertain to shotgun shooting by the way.
It also gets a little crowded since the other 'bigger' shotgun range closed last year.
The only other ranges that I am aware of are; Lemon Grove Gun Club in Alpine, they sometimes have open to the public shoots I think once a month. I'm pretty sure that they have two trap ranges and a sporting clays course that is walkable.
Redlands, which is not too far from Escondido has several trap fields along with a rifle and pistol area.
The San Diego Shotgun Sports facility is still closed as of now, but there has been some word that they may be able to re-open on a limited basis in the next few months.

Escondido fish and game assoc. has 2 trap ranges and scheduled shoots are open to the public. The range schedule is on their website in the newsletters. Regular trap hours are tues. 8-1 and Wed and Sat. evenings. My dad is a member and shoots trap sometimes, usually on tues. Adult trap fees are $6 for nonmembers per round. http://www.escondidofishandgame.com/index.php
Unfortunately no skeet or sporting clays ranges there.

i have shot on the pistol range at project 2000. i did also scope out their rifle range, but ran out of time and didnt get to use it. as i remember their prices are a bit high. i looked at their shotgun range and thought about trying it out, but i dont have anyone to go with me. all my friends are still rookies and cant shoot clays to save their lives, so for now i just go to jacumba and while everyone else is shooting bottles with the rifles and pistols, i will turn around and toss some bottles and clays around for myself

Ask about the manual thrower. If you bring your own clays and have an RSO there...they only have to supervise. I think the automatic trap needs an RSO with the specialized training.

At least that was what I was told...and I was going to shoot sat the 18th...

IIRC P2K is around $7 or $7.50 per round for non-members, which is a little high, but if you're a member the price drops to $6 or $6.50, which is about where the 'big' range pricing was.
As far as I know, noone laughs at a rookie missing, everyone hadda start somewhere!

Just checked the SDSSA web site and it looks like they might be re-opening at least 4 ranges within the next few months.

You are correct, that's what Robert O'Keefe announced last month at a shoot that I was attending at another range. He sounded very optomistic.

Duncan Hunter has a bill before Congress to help with that re-opening.

I have also heard that only factory ammunition will be allowed as that was probably the real issue with the shot leaving the premises in the first place.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed......I really miss shooting skeet.......although I have enjoyed a renewed interest in handgunning at the SDPD Range since the closing last October.
